Maybe stupid question Vista [sr 1] [ramblings]
Q: Just before I was this straight .
If I order this (http://www.amazon.com/Windows-upgrade-Vista-Basic-Premium/dp/B000KJGIMK/sr=8-8/qid=1169879028 / ref = sr_1_8/002-4168114-7835252? Pe = s = UTF8 u0026 miscellaneous), I am basically paying $ 100 dollars for the Home Premium, correct? It says it comes with a free upgrade coupon, it almost seems too good to be true, although I have heard rambling about doing things like this before.
Thanks for the help.
Best Answer: 1. There isnt much(if any) "Vista Only" hardware, as long as you can get the drivers for it, XP should work just fine.
2. The OS doesn't matter as far as reading documents only the software that reads them. If you made a word document in Vista using Office 2007, you will need to have Office 2007 in XP to correctly view it.
3. Yes, you can format and install XP from the XP install CD.

Re:Wait a minute… How exactly does this tech guarantee work? I have a retail version of XP pro upgrade that I purchased in 2001. I assume this will not work since my XP is so old.

Re:Just a little info. If you buy a RETAIL version of XP Home, you can get an upgrade to Vista Basic for free.($10 shipping). But no option to upgrade that to Vista Home Premium. Details at this website.

The $49 charge is to upgrade from an OEM version of XP Home, which also applies to systems that come with XP Home installed.
So the cheapest way to get Vista Home Basic was to buy a retail XP Home upgrade when it was on sale for $40 at CompUSA, or for $30 at Office Depot. And maybe some stores will have similar sales, although once Vista is on their shelves I kinda doubt it.
Since you want Vista Home Premium, this isn't pertinent to you, but others might be looking for the absolute cheapest way to get Vista.

Ah, cool. I didn't think to check Newegg for some reason. Thanks for the help, I'll probably go with that.
EDIT:Well, I have XP, but let's just say it wasn't acquired at a store…
The main reason for that is because I built this PC for Vista/DX10, so I didn't see the point of going out and buying XP when I was just going to get Vista a few months later anyway.
No, the upgrade coupon requires an additional $49 to even get Vista Home Basic according to that website. If you have a current XP license, you'll have to pay more (even if that XP license is legit).
The $49 to Vista Basic "special deal" is only available if you purchase the XP Home w/ Vista Coupon you linked to in your original post.

Re:Just get the Vista Home Premium OEM at Newegg here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16832116202)
It's only $20 more and it's a safer bet. AFAIK you have to pay shipping and handling for Vista anyway and it is at least $10. I'm not exactly sure how much the upgrade from XP Home to Vista Home Premium is, but I do know for sure it is over $20.
The Amazon listing tells you to go to this website (http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vista) to upgrade and it's showing $79 +S/H for Vista Home Premium and $49 +S/H for Vista Home Basic if you currently have XP Home.

Re:No, XP Home does not upgrade to Home Premium without paying extra. It upgrades to Basic. You need MCE for Home Premium.
