Modem performance question . He says she says . [modem performance] [phonelines]
Q: I gave my g / f my old computer .
This same computer that I used at home ~ 53k to connect to AOL (parent ISP)
At her apartment, she can not connect to AOL over 28k, and can not connect to the most free ISPs
I say that the problem is phone lines in its environment (other city), but she said she tied her fine old crappy eMachine .
She says the problem is the modem and thinks we should get a diff . What do you think 0.
? EO modem chipset? ISA modem?
Easy Performance Appraisal
Re:Man Slik, you amaze me dude. I LOVE LT win modems too. They are excellent. I've played with tons of them and had nothing but good luck with 'em. They are inexpensive, install like magic EVERYTIME, and connect like a bandit.

Re:Look, for a cheap way to find out, get her this Lucent Technologies modem for $15 from Thompson's Computer Warehouse. I'll even point you to the latest drivers…I've had 4 Lucent Tech winmodems in different machines and they were at least as good if not better than any other modem, and very, very inexpensive. I still have one in my machine now (with cable modem as primary, though). Anyway, it's a cheap way to ease her concerns:

Note: All Lucent Modems take the reference drivers no matter what brand they are…use the latest:

Re:Nothing can be done since they only gaurantee 2400. It sucks but it's life. You could have them test the lines in her area but don't count on anything being done about it.

Re:she wouldn't know how i did it but she'd know it's still slow….. her connection is PAINFULLY slow, like im sure her real throughput is in the teen range… if it's the phone lines, what can possibly be done other than getting a cable modem (don't suggest DSL, SWB sucks!)

Re:… or you could put AT&F in the extra settings of the DUN connection and it will report the port speed. 57.6K anyone? I used to use this one on people who called me saying there internet connection was slow
Managers Guide to Performance
Re:Some modems when set to Hayes Compatibles will show they are signing on at like 52-53,000 every time you sign up! But don't be misled this is not the actual sign on rate. Make her happy set it up as a "Hayes Compatible" and she'll be signing up in the 50's all the time and she will think your a wiz

Re:I am 90% sure it is phone lines. The telco's only gaurantee 2400 connections. No, I didn't mistype…. 2 4 0 0….
I will say this though. To stay in your Girls good graces….I would get her a new modem and a new ISP. ![]()
