Q: Kinda got the cart before the horse – Ive already ordered one.

I d appreciate any feedback on the quality of this cable modem.

Thanks for your help!

Best Answer: The motorola SB5100 does not have Wireless capabilities.

You obtain the Wep key from the wireless router… If all else fails on the router, you can do one of two things:

1. Identify the gateway on a pc that is connected to the router, then go into the administrative settings of the router to either disable or reset the wep key

2. Do a factory reset of the router, which then releases the wep key (and therefore makes it unsecured)

If all else fails, contact the router manufacturer, but keep in mind the SB5100 does not have wireless built into it – I have one and if it did then I wouldn't need my Linksys WT54G wireless router.

Re:Moto went through some chip set changes in the past 3 years. I don't have the goods in front of me right now but they have made some successful improvements in cable modems. I have used several brands and I am not joking when I say that I could tell the difference if you were to switch them around behind me. Looking forward to the 5100 since some of the guys at work said it was nice and snappy.

FYI- I did check out the SBG1000 wireless modem\router and it has some buggy firmware which has some DNS timing problems. I spoke to Motorola today and they are supposed to be working on a fix ASAP. It should be real nice once they get that nailed down.

Re:Sounds nice.. :) I have been using a 2100 for about 3.5 years and it works just fine still. I bought a 4200 but havent registered it with the cable company so its been sitting in the box for months… sheesh.

Re:Fairly new to the market but so far it's strong. I will be testing one against the SB4200 this weekend, and from what others have told me it the SB5100 has a new\better chipset. Pages pop faster…. or so I am told.

Re:It rocks. No long time use but I know a few people who dumped the older model one for this one and they say it fixes all the problems they used to have with the older model.
