Re:SHARE.EXE comes with DOS, as well as Windows 3.x

SHARE was needed for file locking if Word was run over the network. Word doesn't actually need SHARE.EXE to run….what it does is check for SHARE.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and in the path.

Simply put a dead reference to run SHARE.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT. That should work. If that does not work, create an empty text file called SHARE.EXE, put it in the root directory and the Windows directory, and call it from AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Stupid, but that's how you get around it.

Re:Weird. SHARE functionality is built-in Windows. You shouldn't need to run the old DOS EXE.

Someone might have a copy of share.exe around somewhere on an old Win 3.1 disk unfortunately I burned all my copies of Win 3.1

Re:I remember needing to run that program in win 3.1 to enable file sharing. Sounds strange that it'd be asking you for that under Win98…
