Q: any idea how to fix this?

Best Answer: Some advice on system restore and how to try it in safe mode or troubleshoot it can be found here:

I know from experience that if a virus/ malware scan has removed any files from a saved restore point it won't work as it cannot restore missing files and the entire operation fails. I tend to create restore points at least every week and if everything is working ok remove all previous restore points.

Re:Try this one-time McAfee scanner: right-click this link, Save Target (http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfadden/scan.txt), it's a text file with instructions.
Re:Certain viruses and spyware disable msconfig to prevent you from removing them from starting up.
Re:safe mode no worky
system restore no go
ran AVG, adaware, and spybot
Re:-Try booting in safe mode to see it works then.
-Use the system restore utility to restore back to when it worked.
-I think you can download the exe and place it back in the appropriate directory.
