As a layer 2 device the switch couldn't care less what it's IP is. The only reason why he'd want to change the IP would be for management purposes however it'll work just fine without the change. And if for what ever reason there would be a need to manage?

Oh yeah, I know the Router would have to be put by itself on a computer set to obtain an Auto IP and then change the core IP.

So why not to do it Now when it is easy?

Oh yeah Hmm, but then who would have the last word.

You said "have to change the IP" which isn't accurate. If all he ever wants to use it as is a switch then just disabling DHCP is all he needs to do. I would also recommend that he change the IP of the second router however he doesn't "have" to do it.

About 99% of home routers are set to 255.255.255.0 as their subnet unless the ISP is limiting the IPs the device can give out, thus I didn't think it was worth mentioning, but it is possible…

Re:Just curious, it seems like intuition to plug the WAN of the Linksys to one of the regular ports of the DLink. Can someone egive a technical explaination of why that doesn't work?

Yes read Jack's page… because if you just follow guys your going to run into a dhcp nightmare :)
He already said he disabled DHCP on the Linksys so there shouldn't be any problems.

Re:I'm gonna try that as soon as I get home. I'm gonna feel real dumb if it was just because I plugged it into the wrong port. I hope it works. I have a 5-port GigE switch also for when I connect the other comps. Just want to make sure it works before I start plugging everything in….easier to troubleshoot.

Re:Follow guy's advice however you're still going to run into a problem as you'll only have 4 available ports when you connect the two 4 port "switches" together. If you want to get all 6 wired computers on the network you're going to need to go buy an 8-port switch and connect that to the D-Link.

Re:Probably better not to use the wan port on the linksys. Just connect it to the dlink with one of the lan ports (might need a crossover cable if neither can autosense that) and use it like a plain switch.
