Q: I was getting Internet Explorer errors and registry problems on my computer so I formatted and everything and after a fresh install of Win98 its still the same mistakes that I ever I tried IE 5.5 and I got the errors, so I re- formatted and not the update is, I still get the same errors. I have a few friends of mine and we have no idea what to do, someone please help?
Best Answer: Ok. What a mess. If multiple scans with multiple products will not work you will never be able to regain control of the operating system, and you will spend hours getting there if you know what you're doing! The mess could also expand.
Start from scratch and do a fresh install. Delete the current partition(s) when asked if you want to – during the install.
Create a new partition and format it with NTFS – full format.
Do a bacic install onto the C:\ drive.
Whoops – stay unplugged from the Internet while you do the install.
When the install is done- Install your applications. Reboot between each one or suite.
Install a good big name antivirus program. Reboot.
Type "chkdsk /f" at the command prompt and let it run. Reboot.
Go to System Tools and run the Disk Defragmenter. Reboot.
Hook up to the Internet and download Windows Defender from microsoft.com and install it and make sure the real-time scanning is activated. It should load on boot. Yes it will slow things a bit.
Now there you have it. Your os should have auto updates enabled, your antivirus software should have autoupdates enabled and Defender will have auto updates enabled. You are now pretty safe, but you will want to install Zone Labs free Zone Alarm firewall. It is a fantastic product.
Good luck!
Re:Make sure also during your windows setup that the virus setting in the bios is disabled.
Re:Try formating again & install Win98, once this is done install the Via 4 in 1 Drivers before any other drivers if you don`t get this far before you get problems then you may have a faulty CPU,I had the same sort of problem where I was getting errors,BSOD, & it was really hard to get a clean install,& the problem in my case was CPU had gone bad, also is your harddrive working OK,try a different harddrive.
This sort of problem can be hard to track down you need to find out if it`s software or hardware related.

Re:yes it says its corrupted in almost every setup file, and IE is giving me an error with my mshtml.dll file, or atleast thats what its showing when every it's crashing.
Re:What kinds of errors does IE give you?
By registry probs, u mean windows gives u a message that it's corrupted?
Re:In my meager experience, registry errors are often caused by memory problems. Maybe a friend has some memory you could swap into your machine to try?
Re:What is the motherboard? If it's a VIA chipset based motherboard, you need to install the 4in1 drivers that came on a cd with the motherboard, or commonly referred to as an inf update. Same with intel 815 based boards.
If it is overclocked, it may not be stable at the speed you have it at.
