My next OS. Please help. [dell dimension] [win 98]

Q: Hi,
I will purchase a new P4 in the relatively near future. Im having trouble determining what version of Windows to get my OS.

I am very comfortable and happy with who I am currently using Win98. Plus I know his ins and outs. The new Dell comes standard with Win ME, but I can get or 2000. I have read great things about 200 to win here, so Im leaning in that direction.

I my computer for general business applications, web authoring and it does a fair amount of getting used as a gaming platform. NHL2001, actually all EASports games, Sim City, Delta Force, etc. I am concerned that a move to the newer OS will my games uplayable and harder to support my other software.

Does anyone has any pointers or experience with the new operating systems and can help me decide?

Thanks,
Scott Ohara

Best Answer: If it is a laptop take it to a computer shop. It sounds like the hard drive is broken. Your local computer shop be able to confirm then fix this problem

Re:if your software/hardware supports it then go with Windows 2000.

Re:Hi,
Well I figure by the time I get the new computer I will have played out the existing EA games that I have right now. Im sure that by then, the new ones and subsequent ones will support Win2k

UPDATE:
I just saw this at NT Compatible:

Has anyone used this? How about with EA Games?
Trick Software to think its running on Win98 (http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq26.shtml)

Re:I would recommend Win2K. Before I installed Win2K I had Win98 installed. Now I will never go back. Most of the games that I have work on Windows 2000. Another option would be to create a small partition with Win98 on it so that you can play games that can't run on Win2K.

Re:As of now no EA Sports games work under Win2K. And a few other titles don't work.. It does kinda suck but Win2K still is the best choice IMHO. Whatever you decide I would stay away from WinME, from what I've seen very few people like it..

Re:you can check www.ntcompatible.com to see if your software is compatible with win2k. Also, check that your video card manufacturer has good drivers out for win2k, or else your screwed.. if you have an Nvidia card, i can deffinetely reccomend win2k, the reference drivers nvidia puts out for win2k work great, i can play anything i've tried, and i use win2k server.. i put thumbs up in that area
