Q: I got my new 4 . I have an , 433 Celeron, 160 MB RAM, sound and image on the MB. I have reinstalled W/98. I have no sound icon on my taskbar, and I have no sound. My modem does not zoom. In the Add / Remove Programs / properties, installing / removing only one item. What did I do wrong?

Thank you for your help,
Raymond

Best Answer: LOL

You know had I not done the exact thing before I might feel a bit more sympathy.

The Answer

Install the video drivers. Even though you installed windows the built in drivers are not sufficient to run everything you want and its the little things like IE that make life bearable.

Drivers can be downloaded from the following:

Nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDown…
ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Enjoy

Re:Just put the disk # 1 into the cdrom and rebbot , then follow the directions…
sorry to hear that you bought a HP ….I did too:disgust:

Re:I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions. I do have the 2 cd's provided by HP. Now I just have to figure out how to use them. I hope that I can help someone, someday, on these very helpful message boards.
Take care,
Raymond

Re:If you have the Brio "BA" model, here's your sound driver link:

Does your Zoom modem show up in Device Manager? Does it have any yellow exclamation points over it there? What error does it give you when you try to use it?

Here's your Zoom Modem download page:

Re:The devices are not being recognized because win98 does not have the drivers built in to support it. The other guy is right that you should have some sort of recovery cd that came with the HP. This basically destroys all your information and restores the computer back to factory conditions (assuming you did not install any aftermarket products). If you don't have the cd, you can do a couple of things… Go onto the HP website, find the model of your computer, and write down the chipsets it lists for your modem and sound card. Sometimes companies will have separate driver files available to download for the system. Or you can pop open your computer, find the chips for the modem and the sound card, write down the numbers and go searching for that particular chipset drivers…. www.windrivers.com is a good place to start.

Re:Do you have an "Other Devices" category in Device manager? If you have things like "PCI multimedia audio device, and PCI communication device", you don't have the drivers installed for the devices. I'm not sure if that system requires a chipset driver to be installed, but if it does, It needs to go in first. If it didn't get installed, but you installed the other device drivers, they will probably not work. Hope this helps!

Re:Didn't your HP come with a special Windows C/D where it reinstalls
to where it was new???
If you have a normal Win9* C/D you're going to have to do a Web
search for all those drivers…..I'd start at the HP site…

Re:You bought HP: end of story.

OK, you could have bought Comcrap which would have been even worse…lol

Your problem sound like one word…drivers…drivers…drivers. I wouldn't concern yourself with lack of items in Add/Remove, after all you haven't installed anything yet have you !
