Need help with WinXP u0026 Crossover Cable (PC to laptop) [crossover cable] [cable pc]

Q: Ok, so my HTPC downstairs with two network cards. On one card I connected to my router and the internet works fine.

On the other, I have a connected to a WinXP laptop. I can not connect my HTPC to be seen. I can map and it still says “Cable Disconnected.” I suppose it could be the cable, but I highly questionable, since the laptop shows that connected.

What it could be? What steps should I take to be set. (I want to share the internet with the laptop) when I set up ICS on the network card in the HTPCs, I no longer have access to the Internet and still have the connection shows same.

Help!

Re:I would definitely try another cable. Most of the time when it says cable disconnected it's a physical/hardware problem, not software.

Re:the nic works fine cuz i tested out the internet connection with it & it worked, same for the laptop…however, when i try to bridge em, the cable still says disconnected. It COULD be the cable, that's a definite possibility. I was just wondering if anyone has had that same error & it was something else

Re:Have you tried plugging the router into the other nic, and if so does the htpc work ok? If not the NIC could be bad.

Is the HTPC a WinXP machine? If so, I wonder if you need to bridge the 2 ethernet connections. Go into network connections, select the 2 ethernet connections, right click, choose bridge connections. I did something similar to bridge an hpna and an ethernet network the other day, and it worked — it became like a single network instead of 2 separate networks.

Let us know if you try this, and if so whether it gets you anywhere. RW

Re:If it still says "Cable Disconnected" then something is wrong with the connection. Try a different cable or even a different NIC – the one in your machine could be bad.

Re:true, i know i COULD do that, but that would cost more money which i'd prefer not to do since this is for my roomates. i know it CAN be done since i used to have my own computer & my laptop hooked up through crossover, just forgot what setttings i needed to have. i'm not lookin for any other way to hook these 2 up than just with a please. thank you

Re:Get a cheap Hub or a Switch, and connet them to a regular port on the Router, you will get more ports under the same DHCP, and Routing system.

Re:nope, i do have a router, but all 4 ports are being used. Therefore, i have one of the ports going to the HTPC, and the other 3 to my upstairs computers. But i want to connect a laptop downstairs, hence the 2 net cards & the .

Re:On one card i have hooked up to my router, and the internet works fine.If you have a Router, why do you need ICS, and two cards?

You probably mean Modem?

The best solution, wait for the weekend, one of the Mega Stores should have a Router for $30.
