Need to basic principles of a simple wireless network knows [share files] [ethernet card]
Q: OK, I get a laptop and possibly a wireless PC card. What should I do (and / or receiving) to the network for my home PC to connect to my cable Internet and file sharing and such. It will only be two machines. My computer is now just a basic Ethernet card. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
Best Answer: There could be lots of reasons. How much Memory(RAM) do you have ? If its 512 or under you might want to try increasing your virtual memory. How much freespace is left on your hard drive? If its maxed out that would explain the slowness. You haven't put one of those "free" anti spyware programs on it have you?(Like Adaware ) if so that is the reason it running slow.
Re:guy12
Well you can go this way and you will have a Very Quirky system.
What you need is a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.
1-4 computers can be connected with a Wire. Many computers can be connected with Wireless.
Right now you can connect the Cable Modem to such a Wireless Router and Connect your Desktop with a wire to the Router.
Get a PCMCIA Wireless Card for the Laptop and you are set.
If you do not care to spend few $$ more get this deal.
At the moment the best performance for the price is: D-Link Extreme G Bundle Kit ($89 after rebate) (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10344769&loc=101&sp=1)
Re:Thanks! It looks like I need a wireless access point, which can be wired to my existing NIC in my home PC, then just configure the wireless PC card in the laptop and that should get the computers talking to each other, right? Then I just setup my cable internet for the additional computer. That's what I have picked up from the links. Is there any other hardware that I will need that I missed other than the WAP and PC card?

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.
