New Rig boots for 10 seconds then switches down [asus p5gd2] [pcie video card]

Q: Hey everyone, just
I together a new installation with the following:

P4 gig OCZ PC5400 775 3.4ghz

1 perfomance DDR2
ATI X700
1 hdd
1 PATA DVD-R drive

I put everything together and booted it up and running for like 10 seconds all the fans then spin up is completed, no beeps (I may be the case speaker connected wrong) and I can over and over, I tried a few times in a row and it does the same each time.
I removed the heatsink and re Artic Silver and reinstalled the heatsink (which is intel stock)

I an Antec SL-400 400 watt power supply and I asked and most people who said earlier that the 20-pin power will work.
The diet is a 20-pin motherboard connector with the 2×2 CPU connector and the motherboard has a 24-pin connector, I connected the 20pin without the other 4 pins used, which I believe the PCIe card.
But, the X700 is not the external power plug on the system, it is just power from the PCIe bus . So I think the problem might be the extra 4 pins are not about the power of the PCIe card and are either not enough power, or overwhelming power supply.

I tried the heatsink, thought it might be thermal shutdowns, now go I go to buy the 480 neo power supply and swap to see if it will adopt the problem.

any advice?

Re:ok, I'm back, so here is he new situation, much like the old situation
I got the antec 480W power supply now with the 24pin connector,
I took everything off the motherboard, took off all the motherboard screws and put the round paper pads on all the screws and then reinstalled the screws on the motherboard. put the memory back in, put the cpu back in, and I looked for damage but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. I put the AS back on the cpu, put the heatsink on carefully. put the X700 pro back in, connected the power on the motherboard, the 2×2 cpu connector and the 24 pin. Connected the cpu fan plug, connected case fans, and hdd drives.
green light showing power to the motherboard is on, so I know the mb is getting power.

oh shit! I just turned it on and wallah!
man this is like my 10th computer to build and it was pissing me off

the memory is only being found at pc2-4300 though
thanks for the help guys

Re:took the video card out, any pci cards out and had just memory and cpu in there and it does the same thing, no beeps, just powers up and then shuts down

Re:connected the speaker a diff way and now I am getting a beep tone error

I took the memory completly out of the system and its acting the same way but giving me beep errors

I put the memory back in and now it gives me no beeps, it just boots and shuts down

Re:got the new antec power supply, booted up the cpu and this time I get the the bios POST screen and then it shuts off, same thing.

so I am getting video, I still don't hear any system beeps though, b/c the motherboard calls for a 4 pin speaker connector and I have a 2 pin with no labels on the pins, one red and one black, so I tried the 2 configurations with the ground wire being black and the red on the speaker connector and then on the +5V connector and I don't get any speaker beeps,

I guess I will have to try to reinstall the cpu, ram, and heatsink again…

could this possibly be a short in a motherboard screw or something?
Is it definitely power related ?
I didn't use any of the paper circle isolators on the motherboard screws, I will install those on all the screws and see if it makes any difference

Re:Yes, I saw your post, but you didn't reseat the cpu/ram, you only reapplied AS. That's just my guess and it doesn't take too long to try it.

Re:nah, on this ASUS motherboard the motherboard plug only goes in one way, and its not in the center, its to the bottom of the plug, I think its related to not having that 24 pin plug, or adapter like you guys are saying. I just went out and got the Antec 480W Neo Power, power supply, its got the 24 pin connector and I will repost the results.

guy: in my post I said I redid the heatsink and chip with new artic silver. will try to reinsert the ram though

thanks for the input,
will report back

OK… I hope you didn't center the supply input to the board right? Get an adapter, sounds like that is the prob… pm me for more info.

Edit; spelling
