Oh crap, I have enough power? Plz help! [300w power supply] [12v fans]

admin / March 19th, 2011/ Posted in Hardware / No Comments »

Q: Hey everyone, Im one item away from building my system, my motherboard comes in on Thurs!
I have a question about the amount of power a need.

I Im going with my case, and I grabbed two the same day. Both take either male or female 4 pin power connections to the 2 black / 1 yellow / 1 red wire. Niether take the usual 3 pin connector.

My PSU has four all together, and I wonder if this is enough. I hope to put in two HDDs and a CDRW and CD-ROM drive, is that not all four it used? What else could take this one? What do I do?

Please help if possible. 977 503

Edit: Hey, I thought of something, since each of the fans have both female and male connector, can I get a cord to take the PSU, run it for a fan, and connect the female of the other on the first 2 fan and run off the same power? I hope so.
If which are M / V for that exact purpose, but my face is red. Better to be embarrassed or not enough stroombron than .

Assuming this works, I now have a fan X2, 2 CD drives, HDD and a power source. This will use all my power cables from my PSU. Is there a way to connect another HDD?

Re:Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm glad I found this board, it was kinda by chance, but I've had some great help here! The problem of the day seems to be that my MB hasn't arrived at the place I ordered it from yet. It's the last thing I need, and they said it may/should be in today, but I called a couple times without luck. Boo! I have to work the next three days, so I bet it will arrive then.

As for the wires and the PSU, I already DL'd a pdf of my MB's manual from MSI, and went through the connections in it, labelling everything I could ID on the PSU. It looks like I'll need the 2×2 power connector as well as the 2×10 20 Pin connector.

Watching the clock, hoping they'll call,

Darryl

Thanks for the good luck too! I've had lots of time to prepare, I've already got my 2 fans and flppoy drive mounted, I hope a lot pf pre planning (mainly for prep, but also because I wanted to do at least *something* toward getting started building!) will make it a fun experience!

Re:Yea, 300W will most likely be enough, I just did not want to say that sure it will work then on some odd chance it does not and you start callimg me a jack ass for telling you it would ;) . And yes they are fairly easy to swap out. All you have to do is open the case, unplug the the old power connectors, ie. motherboard connector, floppy, cd, harddrives, fanes what not, slid out then old one and slide in the new and connect every thing back. I can not imagine it taking even the slowest person more than 1/2 hour. I fyou do descide to get a new PS look at the Antec truepowers and the Enermax. If you do upgrade get atlease at 350-450 so as to give your self room to grow. Also good luck on your first build and remember to take you time and plan everything and check all your connectors and it will make the process alot less stressful, it is suspose to be a fun event. I fyou have any questions fell free to pm or just ask any one of the knowlagable people in these forums. Good luck :)

Re:Breathe buddy, it will be okay :-) The 300w PSU will be more than enough juice for your setup, assuming it is of quality. Enjoy your new system :-)

Re:Oh, I had another revelation here, and Again, I feel like a jackass. Don't argue, hear me out :)

I ust now realized that I want 2 HDDs, two CD drives, and my GF3 in my new rig, with a 300W supply. Well, in my current Dell, I've got the SAME GF3, 2HDDs, and the exact CD Drives I'm hoping will be powered by my 300W one. Duhhhh! The only thing that will be different between the 2 systems is the 2 small I just bought. I'm thinking that if the 200W one will power all the stuff it is, than the extra 100W in the new one should handle the 2 fans.

Another thing I should have thought of earlier..

It's funny the things you forget when you get worried about whether something you took so much time for gather and research will work.

Re:Oh, splitters? Cool. I've never built a computer before, so I wasn't sure if you had to use what you have or what when it comes to power connectors. I won't be adding the second HDD for a while, if at all, and my video card's just a regular GF3, not a Ti. Hopefully this will provide enough juice. Can you swap out PSUs easily?

Thanks for the quick respone too! I was stressing for a minute there..

Re:They sell all sort of spliters, you should not worry about if you have enoght connectors, you need to make sure that 300W is going to give enough power on the +3.3v, the +5v and the +12v rails, here is a link to the cable spliters spliters (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=1&manufactory=1281&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
