OK, I'm a noob question Networks [small business network] [networking question]

Q: OK, Ive set up a with 8 connections, I want stability, which would be better, a hub or a switch?

Re:See this thread (http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=803604&highlight_key=y) for an in-depth discussion of hubs versus switches — otherwise just take it on blind faith that switches are better.

But what about a router? Are you going to have a cable or dsl connection in this network? If so, get an 8 port router or router + switch. (And before I'm corrected, I think I understand now that what we call a router is really a router+switch.)

Re:Switch… not much more expensive and provides ALOT faster transfer speeds between machines on your LAN.

For price/performance I would recommend a Netgear….

Re:To simplify things for you, hub -> shared bandwidth, switch -> dedicated/port. Overly simplified, but you get the idea and it should answer your question about those two.

Is this only an internal network or will it have exposure to the outside world? Therein lies a bigger question.

Re:I would say switch too, but what kind of "Network" are you planning?
