OK when WinXP was installed in a separate partition in a system that makes sense as a location for Win 2K D? [dual boot] [win 98]

Q: It is known that there is concern (but probably a workaround) in an attempt to install a on a system with Win 2K installed. A matter of drive and partition recognition, I think. Would that do not relate to it as WinXP were installed in an empty and a separate partition (logical c) in a system that makes sense as a location for Win 2K D and Win 2k drive assignments?

Re:Thanks Andy, it looks like the matter is in hand. I will go for the installation tomorrow.

Re:Win2K and WinXP are essentially slightly different versions of the same OS. There is no problem with WinXP and Win2K coexisting, and using the same boot loader.

Re:My Win XP CD is very much legal. Mailed to me directly from Microsoft.

I think I may have thrown you off. My main concern is the factor of Win98, being installed after Win2K is already on the system. Not the CD rom booting aspect.
I believe that WinXP would see Win2K and permit itself to be installed on the C logical and without corrupting the pointers in the MBR and then I would later make Win2k back to the default OS.
My real concern is whether there is any danger in re-installing after Win2K is on the system.
It is correct that would be problematic with the MBR, but Win XP would not ?

Is your copy of WinXP legitimate?

If you cannot boot up from your CDROM, you should try it from the Windows XP boot disks.

Booting from the boot discs tend to be much cleaner anyway… I only do so when troubleshooting or planning on gaming for an immense ammount of time, etc…

Re:AhAA ! The latest OS last !

(Damn, 10,247 posts !) Thank you !

So XP is likely to be gentle to Win2K as it will recognize the parttitions created in Win2k. ?

Have you seen a reference indicating that XP could be installed from within Win 2K – which would then kick one out and directly to a proper boot up ? ( I have the install XP with a non-bootable CD Rom, and that might be a way to go.)

Re:Nope, it will be fine.

It always works as long as you have all your drives plugged in and you install the latest OS last.

Is there a way to install WinXP pro on a C drive in a multiple boot situation, where Win 2K is already on the D drive (both logical on one physical SCSI HD) with 2 other SCSI drives and 2 other IDE drives and with the various partitions ? thru ?Q? established through Win2K ?
Would XP screw up the boot.ini of the , making it unworkable to boot to Win 2K ? Actually, the partitions is the concern, after booting.

It is known that there is concern (but presumably a workaround) when attempting to install on a system with Win 2K installed. It is known that one must install FIRST, as it does not have the liberality or flexibility of partition assignment that Win 2K has and could screw up the PARTITION TABLE. (which is the closest one wants to come to death) Such would not be a good thing.

Would that concern not be there if WinXP were installed in a blank and separate partition (c logical) in a system that has D logical as its location for Win 2K and Win 2k drive assignments ?

Re:Could you split that last sentence? I'm not too sure what you are asking.

In any case, it's possible to change the drive letter assignments in Win2K and WinXP, so it should be fine for whatever you are trying to do.
