P4 1.6A or AMD AthlonXP 1800 based system [ddr memory modules] [athlon xp1800]

Q: There are many articles stating that the P4 1.6A is the next Celeron 300A. Its just the right oc to 2 GHz with only one good air cooling.

Would it is better to go for the P4 1.6A or get the ?

Im wondering what kind of heatsink should I use for the P4 1.6A and a good motherboard to go along with it.

And because the only available are DDR266 Corsairs. DDR266 can take the FSB setting to get the P4 2Ghz 1.6A or less, the oc?

With the Intel price cut in 3 days, the 1.8A price should be about the same as the 1.6A price – effectively killing the 1.6A. Then the next price cut in a month will move the 2.0A to about the current 1.6A price – effectively killing the 1.8A.

You can even see the prices plummeting at pricewatch in advance of this cut. I'd just get the 1.8A after the cut if you want to overclock. If you don't want to overclock both the 1.8A and the 1800+ XP will give you about the same performance at about the same price – thus its a tossup.


Re:I have the P4 1.6@2100 with stock cooling. It is very quiet and stable, but it is no faster in apps than a XP1.8 not overclocked. I can say thaT I have a "real" 2 GHz system, not a PR 2GHz system–big deal. The main reason I went with Intel is the noise of the AMDs. Try running 4 XP systems in a small office at 2AM, you can't hear the phone ring. RRRRRRRR

Re:I normally keep it at 145fsb (1667mhz) and haven't had any problems. I can do 150fsb and everything has looked good, have just not done any stress testing at that speed.

At 145fsb I run +.075v on a Dragon+ 150 is about the most you can push on this without a dimm voltage mod. Some lucky folks push 160, but I've only seen 2 that high). Most are 143 to 145…anyways.

Alpha 8045 w/49cfm fan. Showing 25C chassis and 36C cpu. Full load is normally just around 40 for this case temp (39-40). The Smartguardian thing is (according to the folks in the Soyo forum at AMDMB) a couple of degrees low. Usually 10C over case is what the CPU will be at. Have had idles as low as 29C in the winter.

I can get everything but maybe max memory timings. The board will run fine at max settings with 2 dimms. Adding a third dimm I had to drop back to 2T command rate. I'll do some tests tomorry and put them up.

I'll wait for your numbers on how the P4 1.6A will perform against the XP1800 when overclocked. But I guess that it would be safer to oc the P4 1.6A becuase it runs cooler than the XP.

BTW, I compare the P41.6A with the XP1800 because here its about the same price. I want to know which has more bang for the buck when it comes to oc scaling.

A P4 1.6A can perform like a P4 2Ghz and the XP1800 when oc'ed max with air cooling can perform like ____ ?

Get the 1.6A.

As for the FSB, it's simple math.

P4 = quad pumped 100 MHz FSB… 1.6A = 16×100
DDR266 = 133 MHz
16×133.33 = 2133 MHz

So yes, DDR266 is fine.
