Re:go to Gibson Research (http://grc.com) he has instructions for how to unbind the NetBios (file/print sharing) from your Internet applications. The User accounts/passwords have very little impact on being able to see the other machines–that's all to do with network protocols and the computer browser service. The acct's passwords have to do with being able to actually connect and access the resources.

Re:Yes file and printer sharing is and has been turned on. Also I do have all the drives set up as shares. But now I can't see either computer and the first (main) puter can't even see itself. Before when I was just logged in as a administartor with no password all was fine! Now with user names and passwords it's not!

That's why I don't like passwords. Something more to go wrong!

Re:guy – i know there used to be a way to bind file and print sharing only to a certain protocol, such as netbeui (sp?), then still have TCP/IP for internet stuff, but unbound from file/print sharing. But I don't remember exactly :o sorry

Re:If I am logged in as a user with adm. with a password, do I have to have a password under the default administrator account or any other account that I am not using?

I have 2 computer3 and a DSL modem, hence the reason for the router. How can I share between both computers without sharing over the internet? File and printer sharing is turned on. Or to put it the other way, how can I block the internet access without blocking the other computer without using a firewall and leaving it in DMZ?

Re:Yes DMZing your IP makes any firewall/NATing your router is doing effectively useless in protecting that computer.

Just having a password on your user account will protect you very little from other vulnerabilities you may have on your system. For instance if you have a printer set up on your windows box that happens to be shared, then if your machine is DMZed anyone on the internet could print to your printer. :)

Having a password on your user account will prevent or at least delay someone from logging in to your machine as you, but there are many other ways to hack a box than simply logging in.

If you use a password, why would you need a firewall?

How do those password programs ( don't know what ther are called)work that try to get your password?

I have a router, but have it set to DMZ since ICU II needs UDP and TCP/IP port ranging and the Netgear RT314 won't do it. Does this make the system open just as there isn't a router?

Re:I have a Win 2k box with no password on my default (administrator) login. I am using DSL via PPPoe to connect to the internet, but I no local network, should I be worried?

If I use a password, after the system is booted up, what good is the password as far as the internet is concerned? Isn't the computer as accessible if there wasn't a password?

No.

When a remote user connects to your box, they have to authenticate with a username and password.

Trust me, EVERY hacker will try Administrator/no password first. Put in a strong password as others advised.

Re:It can be set to autologon (although I can't remember how) as any user. Have a look through the control panel for an option.

Re:If I do enter a password, will I have to enter it everytime I boot up, or can i set it to auto login like I have it now?

Re:I would strongly suggest that you add a password as soon as possible then. Leaving an administrative user wide open is asking for trouble.

Anyhoo…
A null password can still expire. To stop it, goto:
control panel
administrative tools
computer management
local users and groups
find the user you want to configure
right click, choose properties
check 'the password never expires' button.
