PC security software for guest users [pc security software] [playback music]
Q: Hey, all.
My fiance of the brother of my apartment to visit occasionally, and sometimes gets very drunk and screw around with my PC. I have him use the guest account in Windows XP, I would like more restrictions placed on their computer privileges than that. I can not always be here to monitor his activities, so I have set up a kind of program that will enable him to surf the net, play music and, perhaps, but nothing else. I do not want it to download files, and I certainly do not want him to remove my files. Moreover, I want to hide my hard drive contents. I do not want him reading my papers, seeing my files, etc.
What kind of software would do for me?
Thanks in advance!
Best Answer: 1. have you tried setting the primary boot device to your cd drive, and putting the recovery disk in there. Try booting off the disk, might work that way, it doesn't always work when you just stick it in and expect it to load up.
2. if you don't have administrator rights, it won't let you change automatic update settings
Do you have XP or Vista?

Knoppix! Now, there's an interesting idea. I'll have to try it.
I think this would work well in your situation. You don't have to tinker with any of your settings for your OS (other than to password the accounts). I haven't used Knoppix before, but if it doesn't mount NTFS partitions for READ access automatically, you should be good to go from the start. Why put all the effort into safeguarding your system just for a person who gets drunk and screws with your computer? I'd probably say F-off and tell him he can't use it or make him get his own laptop or something.
Re:You could create a limited account and then set NTFS permissions so he doesn't have access to any data you don't want him to have access to.
*EDIT* Just make sure you password protect the other accounts. ![]()

Re:Hm, I would probably recommend possibly trying out Tom's Hardware Guide to installing Windows 2K/XP onto a flash drive and then having him boot from that. OR just even throw a quick Linux distro on there. You can lock those systems down to the nitty gritty, but also, chances are he can't really screw with your NTFS files (WinXP logon screen = password protected and secured), he can't install spyware and the alike on there, and make the only folder he can use the /user/home folder and limit the size to like 1MB if you can. That way, if he tried to download anything, it wouldn't be big and he couldn't really get much of anything.
Well, you can start there. Good luck and keep us updated!
EDIT: Just thought about putting Knoppix on a CDROM and have him use that!
Re:Opera has a kiosk mode. Don't know about preventing downloads though.
Re:You limit all of that with a limited account, can't you?
