Re:<< SMC 7004AWBR for the router >>

i love this router! print server, dial up capabilities, very good wireless features. went thru 5 linksys routers that all pooped out before finding it.

Re:wtf

you never said this was about NETWORK CARDS

hehe i assumed you meant network gear in general.

anyways, i use:

dlink/aopen nics
netgear switch
dlink hub (not in use anymore)

*sigh* if only i had the cash to buy an intel =)

Re:As far as NICs, they include integrated (2) 3C905B, (2) regular 3C905(B), (1) IBM EtherJet (Rebranded Intel Pro100), (1) Netgear FA310, (2) Linksys 10/100, and a D-Link 10/100 CardBus Adapter for my laptop. Switches include 5 port Linksys and a 8 port Netgear.

Re:even though benchmark tests have been done that prove there isn't a very large margin of performance difference between SOHO style networking cards [SMC/Linksys] and more enterprise level equipment [/Intel] I still prefer to get Intel/ cards and when I'm getting a rackmount box with integrated stuff on the board I like to make sure it's an Intel card :)

Re:For my home network: linksys ethernet cards and netgear switches.
Work: Intel ethernet cards and several switch/hub vendors.

The linksys cards I have are great. I have not had any compatibility issues with them on any OS (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Linux, BeOS, Windows several versions of each). I would get some intel cards, but they are more expensive than I want to pay for my home machines. I had some 10baseT cards, but who wants 10baseT anymore? :)

Re:Linksys Router
Linksys 5 port Hub
2 x Linksys LNE100TX NIC
2 x Netgear NIC
1 x NIC
1 x Xircom NIC

Re:SML,

Yeah, I used to be a big fan of nics way back. But for me the slipped somewhere about three years ago. My biggest complaint was auto-negotiation problems with cisco switches.

Linkwhat? Linkwho? eh?

Re:spidey: see my post above :) I use NICs for my workstations because I've never find an operating system that does not support them! However, I've had issues with some i960 MII/RJ-45 TP intel NICs under some OS' :) )

Re:I didn't know there was an ethernet company?

– bye, bye
linksys – linkwhat?
netgear – Bay/Synoptics used to make great stuff

where's intel? where's cisco? where's extreme?

Intel still has the best NIC out there bar none. period. drivers, teaming support, reliability, works with EVERY NETWORK known to mankind, auto-negs perfectly 100% with every switch I've ever used.

Re:<< You're doing a about network adapters, and you don't even have Intel on the list? What are you, new? >>

Yea dude. You need to get Intel up there. I have 2 Intel Pro/100+ in my network at home.

Re:You're doing a about network adapters, and you don't even have Intel on the list? What are you, new?

Intel Pro/100's in my servers and my own personal baby. Realtek cheapos in everything else.

Re:A few cards, mostly laying around, 1 in use 3C509 ISA
4 DE500s, these are the ones I have had the least compatibility issues with and I like the most.
1 Sun LANCE, what can I say it's onboard, 10Mb and the box is SBUS not PCI.

At work we have a whole slew of cards (because we have so many old and new servers), but almost all the new boxes come with Intel 10/100s.

Re:Network Interface Cards (NIC), in a small Network environment.

Tom's hardware compared three NICs. (Aug. 2001)
I used Pricewatch.com to find the best price for these NICs.

1. 3CR990-TX-97 – $80
2. 3C905C-TX $30
3. SMC 1211TX $13

Quote from: http://www6.tomshardware.com/network/01q3/010820/nic-11.html#conclusion

"Well, there is some difference between Network cards. The difference was not that great. Some cards did have better performance than others, but over all most of the cards performed within acceptable ranges. "

If you read the rest, you can infer that if there a difference it will impact high volume cooperate Network, but not three computers sharing the Internet at home.

Another good comparison you can find here:

Re:you'll get quite a few responses to this, but here's what I use:

3C905B/C network cards in my workstations.
Intel Pro 100+ network cards in the servers.

Cisco networking gear to hook it all together; Catalyst 2924-XL 100mbit switches, running everything 100-FDX.
