Pre-installed Vista on first HD. XP install to halt the second HD [hp pavilion desktop] [maxtor 40gb]
Q: New HP Pavilion desktop with Vista Premium pre-installed on a 250GB SATA HD.
I installed my old Maxtor 40GB IDE / ATA HD for dual booting.
Note: is a SATA and one is not.
Both drives are recognized in the BIOS ( CMOS) and Vista.
I can drag files from Vista to it.
I am able to boot order.
When installing XP I get to the point of “installing new devices” and stop any further progress.
Vista on C: Partition Recovery
Vista Change on D:
XP on F: (second hard disk)
Ive even removed the power and SATA cables from the Vista drive.
Unplugged My DSL Ethernet cable.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Re:I'll try burning my copy of Windows like you did. The disc is the only thing left I can think of as I just bought a new Sata hd and had the same problem.
UPDATE: Didn't work.
Also removed video GeForce 256MB video card and hooked up to onboard video. Unhooked everything.

Re:i encountered this problem, i had to burn my copy of windows to another cd then it worked for some reason, probably not gonna help u but if u havent tried it, it could work. Windows is flaky but we all love it, well some of us do.

Re:I burned the ISO SeaTools boot CD with DOS, ran the tests on the Maxtor 40 GB hard drive and it found no problems. The drive is good and I'm afraid to buy another hard drive and have the same problem.

Re:The 40 gig appears to work well and I can drag files to it from Vista. I've run all kinds of tests on it and it passes so it is good.
I'm going to work on this for awhile though. I've unplugged everything and will try again. I could kick myself for not building a system like I have done through the years.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I did disable the Vista HD . Formatted and wiped out any partitions. Did this several times from different sources including the Maxtor utility CDRom. I've tried installing XP maybe 7 times and spent hours.
Bleh, sounds like a definite hw problem
Have any other spare HDs to mess with? Even an ancient 8gb would be enough to test whether it's your 40gb that was hosing you up. Another path is to buy a cheap Sata drive from newegg, even if it doesn't fix you here, HDs ALWAYS come in handy
They are shockingly cheap, I just picked up a 400gb for $88

Re:Unplug the Vista drive before starting the XP install, and use the windows setup to remove any partitions on the 40gb drive before proceeding to format/install process. This will save you a ton of headaches
