Prime95 is a good memory test? [memory thanks] [memory test]

admin / January 7th, 2011/ Posted in Hardware / No Comments »

Q: Im actually running on the standard, and its hitting 900 megs ram itself, so basically my entire concert is taken. I try to find limits of my memory. Thanks!

VoodooDan from HP here. Sounds like your components and cooling system are handling the overclocking well enough. Depending on what you get with the new 512 card, the extra fans may help offset the additional heat. I recommend trying it out, while keeping an eye out on the temps. My 2 4870×2 cards run ~ 67C and up to 75 – 80C under load – but all chips are a bit different, so your temp threshold will be different based on your specific chip and your cooling solution.

If you choose to, go ahead and continue with freq/multiplier increases to overclock, but be very careful if you decide to get into voltage increases to get over that edge. I usually recommend against it for typical overclockers, as the payoff in performance is generally not worth the risk of frying the components.

Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.

Run Burn-In wizard with only memory bandwidth test 15 times in a row. Saved me from memory errors from overclocking. Also saved me from bad ram I've bought, would crash at the bus speed I'm currently at with my old ram. 1 new stick would crash after 3 passes of the benchmark every time, another stick would crash after 7 passes of the benchmark every time. Of course lowering the bus I'm currently at would let the new sticks run without crashing.

MemTest86 to test for bad ram.

I'd rather go for memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/). It's the successor of Memtest86 and recognizes also the newer chipsets :D And Prime95 is a good memtester IMHO. It won't give u any feedback that it crashed due to a faulty RAM, but if it crashes, u know there's something wrong. More like a indirect testing method.

i've controlled for the other variables by running everything but the ram at default, so the only thing instability could be is the ram :)
