Printer Sharing – Windows 98/2000 [network neighborhood] [printer sharing]

admin / November 6th, 2010/ Posted in Networking / No Comments »

Q: My printer is connected to a Windows 2000 machine, and it is shared. Of my system (Win2k), I get access to the printer and shared folders. However, from my sisters computer (Windows 98), I get a prompt for a password when I try to add a network printer or the first computer by browsing . The Windows 2000-based systems can access the 98, but my sister can not browse or access to our systems printer.

How her I can connect to the printer?

Thanks .

Re:As long as you can ping either machine and you haven't changed any of the sharing permissions on the printer the following should fix the problem.

1. On the win98 machine look at properties and see what the network name is under the "Identification" tab.
2. Create an account on the win2k machine with the same name as under the identification tab on the win 98 box.

Now when you try and connect to the win2k machine put in the password you specified for the new account you just created.

Re:did you change anything in the local policy on the win2k machine? double check the "Access this computer from the network" and "Deny Access to this computer from the network" policies since that would be reason the system would block access to the win2k machine.

and do you havel the windows 98 printer drivers on the windows 2000 system?

Re:Didn't work….

I created an account called Guest1 with password "server." The 98 box prompts me for a password only (no username) to access resource \\MACHINENAME\$IPC. I type in "server" and it tells me it's incorrect. I tried the same thing with the regular Guest account, and I get a message saying I have "No permission to access resource." Tried both accounts with blank passwords too.

Re:guy,

Create a new account on the Win2K box. Now go to the Win98 machine and log into Win98 with the exact same account you created on the Win2K box. Now try to access the printer from the Win98 box and you should be able to do it.
