Problem getting dial-up modem. Need help solving problems. [device manager] [dial tone]

Q: Hi.

I just reinstalled Windows 98SE and now they have someone on the computer and the modem can not choose. He says that the modem says no . Is there a way to solve the modem to ensure that it works?

BTW . The modem works perfectly and this configuration was fine, so I doubt its the hardware. Even when I go to , says that the modem is working.

What I think the problem may be that the was falsely telling me that the modem works. I used the default Windows 98SE drivers for the modem. Would that be the problem? Wrong drivers?

TIA,

Sal

Re:Me feels like dummy for not suggesting that first, but since you had mentioned that it was using the "stock" driver, I assumed…..;)

Well, all is good now.:D

Re:Yeah, some of the better modems disconnect the "Phone" jack on the modem when the modem is in use to prevent inadvertent disconnects. Always the first thing to check when "No " is the symptom.
.bh.

Re:Go figure. Apparently the guy had the phone cord in the wrong socket. I didn't even know that the modem had an in and out and didn't know to tell him. He just switched to the input and it works. Doh! With the Windows driver too. I was ready to walk him through a driver update, but I don't have to do it now unless he has other problems. The thing that sucks is that I don't know dial up modems. I haven't used one since '98. I couldn't test it either because I didn't have dial up.

Anyway.. It's fixed. Thanks for your replies!

Re:The default driver for Windows 98 never works for me, even when it says everything is installed correctly. You need to find the exact driver for your hardware. If you're not sure of the model, look on the card and find some numbers. Then, type some of those numbers into the Search function at www.driverguide.com. You can register there, or you can use the default U/P of drivers:all. Good luck.

Re:Default drivers will not work. Modems are a PITA! You need to find the EXACT driver for the modem to get it tow work and you must install the driver in the correct method. I just had a Zoom modem cause me about 2 hours of grief until I install it EXACTLY in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions!

Good Luck!
