Problem w / XP and scandisk / check disk / whatever. [checkdisk] [scandisk]
Q: Did this problem a while back and never figured it out. I formatted (for another reason) and went away.
Anyway, when I was a disc check schedule, no problems found, but when they the PC restarts after the disk check, freezes on the screen telling me that the disk check is performed on the NTFS, etc. screen.
Only way to bring up the PC to power off and resart. I have to choose Last Known Configuration. If I choose Start Windows Normally, it is only through the check disk again and it freezes on reboot.
What the problem with this thing?
Re:in safe mode after the reboot i mean…. where it usually hangs… if it still hangs there, you can probably see where in the process it hangs…
Have you got anti virus on your machine? if not, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run an online scan…
Re:does it work if you start it up in safe mode after the reboot
You mean start check disk in safe mode or start the pc in Safe Mode after it freezes?
I know it won't start in "Start Windows Normally".
What lead me to wanting to run checkdisk is that some pictures are taking forever to view. IOW I have a bunch of regular .jpg's. They are ~150 – 200k each. When I doubleclick on them in windows, they normally open in the default windows viewer (not associated with a thrid party graphics viewer). It says "Generating Preview" for about 30 seconds or so which is a loooong time. I have 1gig of pc2100 and no applications open in the background.
SO I wanted to run the disk check to see if something was corrupt.
Re:It sounds real strange… a search came up with nothing…
All i can think of is that some file is corrupt, but which one… i don't know… does it work if you start it up in safe mode after the reboot? if it does you can read the logs…
Re:It's a maxtor drive running on a promise ata133 card. I'll try the maxtor utility this weekend.
Nope, no Ghost of this drive.
No Norton on my machine either. Last time I used it I had more trouble than it was worth.
I'll be backing up all my important stuff this weekend and maybe reinstalling XP.
Thanks for the help. ANy other suggestions?
Re:If more than one HD, conflicting HD jumper settings can produce weird results.
If single HD, all I can suggest is run the drive vendors utility (Data Lifeguard, etc.).
Do you have a saved restore point prior to the 'last saved' restore point?
Do you have an image of the OS partition to restore?
If you have Norton SystemWorks, can't you launch utilities from CD (DiskDoctor)?
Sorry – all I can think of.
Re:Are you running NT or 2K or XP?
XP Pro w/SP1.
I haven't changed any hardware since the original build. I have installed some new programs but can't see any of them being the problem. Like I said, the weird thing is that it finishes the operation and then freezes at a screen telling me the diskcheck is finished and no problems were found.
Is there a freeware utility I can run a scandisk with so I can see if it's just the windows?
Somebody help.

I didnt read your post, but as long as you are dealing w/ the fomatting harddrive thingy, i suggest you to use Partition Magic 8.0 (Download from Kazaa or whatever)
Good luck
Maybe you should have read his post, then you would have known what his problem was and if you did, you wouldn't have posted… that way this forums IQ would have went up by 10 points…
That would have been a good thing… ![]()

What is wrong with the built in Windows partitioning utilites? Nothing for the average use. And please don't promote piracy here. What does PM8 cost now like 25 bux?
As for his problem. Are you running NT or 2K or XP?
Re:I didnt read your post
Hmm, I'll be nice.

Not even close.
Anybody else?
