Problems with my AOpen Fax Modem [aopen fm56] [hardware modem]

Q: I have an -PM modem. Me think this is a software modem. It runs ok, but I can only connect at 48K max. Is there a setting or something I need to switch?
Also, the modem randomly my internet connection. This is very annoying, especially in the middle of a download. Any ideas on this? To solve?
I did this problem with my old system that had a 56k modem ISA hardware. I have no ISA slots in my new system.
Also, there is to disable the squelch annoying sound while the first dials in. My old ISA modem had a number of jumpers that allowed me to turn off. This PCI modem is nothing that I know of.

Thanks.

Re:If it just happens when you use that modem than it's probably a cheap/bad/noisy modem. Might wanna have the phone company check out your lines to see if they're too noisy or not…could be another reason why you get disconnected.

Re:I have the same modem and the same problem. It disconnect anytime wether downloading or just browsing.

Re:You'd be suprised at how many times I've pimped that link, it's handy to have ;)

Do the disconnects happen when you're surfing or just downloading a file or both?

Re:Thanks guy
I was able to get the sound turned off and that link is a great resource. I'll add it to my bookmarks.
Still working on the disconnecting problem. It happens randomly, no specific time interval…

Re:First off, 48K is probably the fastest you're going to connect due to FCC regulations…48K isn't a bad connection speed anyway.
When you get disconnected in the middle of downloading, does it always happen after a certain period of time? I think IE uses an auto disconnect, where if you're not using the browser for 10 or 15 minutes it'll disconnect you. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections and play around with the Settings.
To mute that annoying squeeling sound, go here (http://www.56k.com/inits/infinit.shtml) for a step-by-step how-to.
