Re:Ok, how about we cut back on a $135 case which isn't going to really be any better than a $20 case.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 – $190
eVGA NVIDIA nForce 680i – $249.99
2×1gig OCZ Platinum Revision 2 – $220
PNY GeForce 8800GTS – $337
Western Digital 320gig 16meg cache – $95
BenQ DW1650 – $24
Rosewill R6422-P BK Black SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case – $15
FSP AX-500a – $91
Stock HSF, but if you must have one CNPS7700-Cu LED – $39.99
Microsoft keyboard, or cheap logitech board – $10

$30 for some fans, not sure how many or what type the case needs. That comes to $1302.98 without shipping, so maybe $1400 if you include shipping.

Re:imho, i would go a 6400, gigabyte 965-s3 and a 8800gtx. you are putting $$$ into a lot of things that aren't needed as badly for gaming – cpu – not a bottleneck even with a 6400, and you can o/c it high, m/b – the 965-s3 is a known, proven good o/cer, many get 3.2+GHz out of them. the 1950pro? i think you are really limiting with the x1950pro, at the very least if your buddy doesn't want to drop the coin on a 8800gtx, go at least with the x1950xt 256MB version for ~$220

this will last you some time, and when the quad core cpus come out cheaper, you can drop one in if you need extra cpu power in a year or two.

also one of the 500-600W enhance psus are pretty nice for the $$$, plus the are 80plus

Re:Reading on the ncix forums for that PSU, there seems to be a few people having some significant problems with it. Specifically with the Radeon x19xx series. I'd imagine it would have something to do with the rather skimpy 15A on the 12V rail. If your not on a super tight budget I'd strongly suggest spending a little more on the PSU. But if you do go with the FSP they're might be a problem reaching the 4pin on the motherboard. I know my antec neoHE works with my p180 though =/

Re:With a flexibly high budget and an overclocked E6600 on the CPU side, wouldn't a 8800GTS make sense for reasonable future-proofing?

This could mean a slight PSU bump too.

Re:BUMP: I would love for someone to comment specifically on the motherboard+memory+heatsink pairing and PSU+motherboard+case fitment. Thanks again!

Re:For those of you recommending the ballistix memory. I have the same memory as guy listed and am about to get my second rma back from crucial. Im using a gigabyte ds3 board, do you guys have any other suggestions for high end memory?

Thanks

Re:Nice build. I have been putting one together for the last few days that is very similar to what you have here.

Changes I would make:
Hard drive…I went for the Seagate 7200.10 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148140), it seemed to have better reviews and is the same price as the WD.

RAM…I originally considered the Corsair, but decided on the Crucial Ballistix (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146565) because of the D9 chips. They are currently $289.99, so a little more pricey.

I went for a Crucial 520W PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817139001) which is pricey at $120, but I like the modular design. If you want or need to go cheaper, the Enhance ENP-5140GH (http://www.neutronexpress.com/prod.cfm/463311/ENHANCE/ENP5140GH/CORE_POWER_SUPPLY) can be had for around $60 and has had rave reviews.

I haven't picked a mobo or video card yet. I'm thinking about waiting a month or two to see the new revisions of mobo and directx10 video cards.

It looks like you're off to a great start. Good Luck!

Re:good overall build. some changes i would make
a PCPC, seasonic, or corsair PSU
a case of higher quality and lighter build
a raptor drive in there somewhere will increase his PC's overall snappiness
i'd get the seagate 7200.10 instead of the WD
and the tuniq tower over the scythe

Re:I am curious about this at well. I posted a thread re: a similar setup only a few minutes before the OP.
