Q: How do you create an emergency repair disk in Win2k? I can not seem to find the option anywhere. : P

Re:The ERD itself in Win2K is a little different from the old one in WinNT. Firstly, you have to create it through Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup.

Secondly, the ERD no longer has a copy of the Registry on it….Win2K's registry is too large to fit on a floppy. The ERD process only backs up a copy of the registry to the Repair folder.

The ERD itself is not bootable. You will need to use MAKEBOOT.EXE from the Win2K CDROM and create the 4 startup floppies.

Re:Also, I think you can just boot from your win88 bootdisk and achieve what you want.just re-partition and format your hard disk, then go to the I386 directory in your CD-ROM and run winnt.exe. hope this helps

Re:In your W2K CD-ROM, look for makeboot.exe or makebt32.exe in bootdisk directory. I think that should let you make a 4-diskette recovery disk.

Re:I really do not see a way around it. I would backup all of your data files, if you can, and try a complete re-install.

What virus scanner do you have?

Re:Unfortunately it isn't. :P

Re:If the other machine is EXACTLY LIKE the one you suspect that might have a trojan, you would be able to with the method I layed out to you. But if you do not, you will not be able to.

Re:Ok: maybe I should elaborate a bit. I installed a program that I'm afraid may have loaded a trojan on my system; to avoid concerns about this, I'm going to back up my system and restart. To do that, I'm creating a restore disk on a different computer, and then am going to boot to disk, format, and reinstall 2k.

How can I best do this?

I should also add the fact that I'm booting off of a floppy b/c I can't boot to CD; I have a non-bootable SCSI card as my SCSI card. I'm going to want to completely format, fdisk, and repartition – then I'm going to install from the CD. But to do this, I can't just boot from a w98 boot disk; so what do I have to do?

Re:In Windows 2000, you will need to go to the NTBACKUP util. There you will be able to create an ERD.
