Q: Right now I have 2 PCs conected win xp with a and using Win XP Internet Connection Sharing.
Now I need a labtop to add to my network (which has a network card). What should I do? Will it be enough if I have a 4 , a router or will I need? I do not know Ming leaving the “main” PC (her all the time anyway).
Which the chepeast / easily / faster to configure?

Best Answer: I completely agree! Belkin is excellent for my small home network (4 computers). It offers both ethernet connections (for desktops) and wireless connections (for laptops and PDAs). I have Comcast high speed internet with this, so my ethernet computers get an LAN speed of 100.0 Mbps, and my wireless laptops get 54.0 Mbps. And all for about $35 at staples. Technology is wonderful!

Re:Router's Firewall won't be as stringent as you software firewall.
I don't have experience with Norton, but Zone Alarm uses program-access controls which tells the software firewall which programs are allowed to access the network.

the router's firewall only usually denies access from the internet to your computer by closing most ports (except a few, like port 80 for web, 225,…).
With the suggested SMC Barricade router can actually decide which ports to open up again (or what port range to open up) via an online-wizard. You can use this for a virtual server / gaming / …

I have both and use them together (router & software firewall) – I think they complement each other fairly well. Whatever hack attempt is able to get through the router is blocked by my software :)

Re:Ok, thanks.
I now have a software firewall (Norton 2003), and sometimes I need to adjust it, or turn it off entirely. Will the routers firewall be as flexible?

Re:Get a router – usually has a built in firewall.
Most routers come with built in switches (kinda like a hub – but faster). Check the number of ports in the back.
So in most cases, one router will be enough.

Will I need a router + hub, or just one router?
