Best Answer: Hello Jai kim
You should first go back to where you got the equipment from and check wih them about your connections difficulty, you may well have to opt for a different set-up. Maybe you could contact the Orange people too and see if they will help you, and of course you may have read the instruction manual for your equipment wrongly, so check it all over again. Then, if you still have no joy…Try another outfit altogether..I hope I have helped you, but be advised, when it comes to complicated set-ups like yours, go back to simple basics and re-start again..Hope this helps you Sir…Tony M

Re:wow, i plugged in the router (i've tried this probably half a dozen times) and now everything works. So, i tried connecting my comp directly to the modem again and doesn't work. Everything works great with the router in between, but i'm still so confused as to why it won't work directly connected to the modem. THANK YOU for all your help all

Re:ok so slowly we're narrowing down what is the problem. I just got my router working, which means both the laptop and router have no problems communicating with the cable modem, so it must be my computer. It shouldn't be the settings, because both the laptop and desktop have identical network settings. Can anyone think of anything else it might be?

Re:i don't remember what thread i was reading or on what site it was, but someone said there were compatibility issues with the motorola sb4100 and via chipsets (my mobo has nforce chipset, but if there's something wrong with via, maybe nforce too?). I don't see how this could be since the sb4100 is used everywhere and I can't find any other info about this.

The only thing I can think of is that there's some compatibility issues with the hardware setup on my computer and the cable modem. Here's everything I can think of about my computer:

Asus A7N8X-deluxe v2.0 (1008 bios just updated)
Athlon 2500XP+ (oc'ed to 2.2ghz)
2×512 mb PC3200 Kingston Hyper-X RAM
Win XP (fresh install so no SP1, but didn't work with SP1 anyways)
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
Seagate 120gb 7200rpm HD
Western Digital 80gb 7200rmp HD

The modem is a Motorola SB4100 (Software Version: SB4100-0.4.4.2-SCM01-NOSH)

Edit: just did a 3com NIC test (included software for my onboard 3com ethernet port) and failed during the test saying something like failed receiving frame in loopback test.

Re:i've tried about 6 or 7 different ethernet cords that I'm sure all work. I've used the cord that I connect my laptop with also, and it still doesn't work.

The desktop (that doesn't work) is the computer that i registered/authenticated on initially but it never worked in the first place.

I'm going to try this MAC address cloning to try and get my router working, but it still doesn't help my desktop.

When I called comcast (5 times in all), we went through everything that they could think of (or read off the screen in front of them) and the last guy i talked to finally said he can't do anything else and was very sorry and if a technician had to come over it would be a $50 charge or something. He told me to call Microsoft next.

Re:I've had experience where the same ethernet cable works w/ one brand of network devices but not another. So as crazy as it sounds, maybe try a different cable??

So you've tried different NICs and even a fresh installed WinXP…what did Comcast say when you called their tech support?

Re:i had to manually register (with them on the phone) on my desktop.
Afterwards, the desktop connected very slowly for a littlebit, but then lost the ip and never renewed. The laptop worked perfectly every time. Since I have a fresh xp install, settings should all be default. We did change the proxy settings to register, but I know I changed them back before trying to go online.

Re:When you switched to Comcast, which machine did you put the Comcast software on to authenticate your modem and account, the desktop or laptop??

My experience w/ Comcast was that the software would modify your Internet Explorer setting so that it would try to connect to Comcast's proxy server and it wouldn't work behind a NAT router.
If that's the case for you uncheck the Proxy server setting and you should be good to go.
