FreeBSD's package management can install binary packages too. I think pkg_add -r is what you would want to use, but I just download OpenBSD packages and install them manually, unless I'm following -current or a snapshot.

Have you looked for a Solaris package for this yet?

SPARC/Solaris 8 (http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlistsparc8.html#vnc)
I didn't see one for sparc Solaris 9.

it's for solaris 8, not solaris 9.

we all have had the same issues, but they're pretty rare. maybe you find it pointless and annoying, but i'm sure you're in the minority. there are packages if you choose to go that route, however some of us like to have fine tune certain features.

i did look at packages, i didn't find what i was looking for. solaris9 didn't have a package. trust me, if i could find a package, i would have gone that route.

Re:FreeBSD's package management can install binary packages too

I know, but AFAIK they're pretty rare since most people just use ports.

*sigh* all this makes you really marvel at the beauty of FreeBSD's ports.

Doubt I'd go quite that far…

what you rather deal with these issues?

i'll take, "make clean install" over this any day.

Re:Does this:

../../imports/x11/include/X11

exist?

Re:i installed the make i picked from sunfreeware. i think it's gnu make or something. in another post, someone mentioned you have to use sun's make, not gnu make, so i really dont know.

Re:make -v
ls -l cc
cc -v

hmmm.. Maybe Solaris uses imake (can't remember, I know there is BSD make, GNU make, and another make..), in which case the version of make won't really matter since it looks like this can handle it. See if there is a configure option for languages (English, French, Chinese, etc).
