Re:Yes, I have the raid controller disabled in BIOS. Turned out that my problem was Microsoft's fax service – soon as I disabled that, my delay/hang disappeared.

Re:guy I see you aren't using the raid controller. Do you have it disabled in the bios? If not try disabling it im not sure this will help but worth a try.

Re:I've tried Bootvis. It finishes its analysis on what was loaded before the OS gets to the "flurry of disk activiity and everything works" time.
I looked at TweakXP and it had a few issues that looked similar to my symptoms. Both my IDE controllers are fully populated by devices so it can't be that the OS is loooking for an empty IDE slot set to AutoDetect. I've uninstalled Messenger and tried a few other things it recommends.
I haven't had the time yet to remove some miscellaneous startup items yet so that's my next step. I thought it might have been my Epson Ink Monitor program because that's the icon that always appears first after the 2 minute lag but I've tried that both with the printer on and with it off (assuming it might be looking for it) and the lag is the same. I'll try uninstalling that if other steps don't work.

I have the same problem with my system, and since mine is a DSL with a password, I have to wait for a second. I didn't have this problem until I loaded up my detonator XP drivers though. I'm not saying that this is the problem, and with this being such a small annoyance, I haven't taken the time to see if that is the real problem behind it, but we'll see.
this is the same situation i have, dsl and a password….but it's just like an additional minute of waiting for the network to boot up…not a big deal though, i just deal with it

Re:That is a great site. I found it posted here back when xp got released. The problem I was having was when I opened up windows explorer then clicked on my computer it would take several seconds to list all of the drives. Sometimes longer than 5 seconds. It was purely accident but I decided to uninstall messenger because I don't use it. I had it disabled already but after uninstall the next time I opened explorer the drives showed up instantly. I had read elsewhere that messenger could cause all sorts of weird problems.
guy, if I would have stayed in I would be elligable for retirement this September. I have been to Pendleton twice. Once for bootcamp then I spent my last few days in seperations platoon.

Re:guy: I checked out TweakXP.com (http://www.tweakxp.com). It's an awesome resource. Thanks for the link.
I've seen a bunch of potential solutions. I wish I was at home right now to try out some of the solutions. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guy. One thing it mentioned (in addition to MS Messenger) is turning off file and print sharing, rebooting, and turning it back on. There are a million and one other tweaks I'm going to play with.

Re:Thanks for the gouge guy. Oh and by the way Semper Fi.
I'll see what tweakxp.com has and try uninstalling Messenger.

The NT, 2000, XP line gets you into Windows as fast as possible, even if the network isn't completely ready, and then continues to dynamically get the rest of the OS running. I remember hearing about this with 2000, that it could take up to 2 minuets after you enter Windows before the network was completely running.
I don't think this is a network issue. I assigned the NIC card (which is typically unplugged from a network) a static IP. The OS should not, therefore, be looking for a DHCP and the delay should not be due to it waiting for that. I had that problem in the past with Win98 when it would take minutes before the OS would start if I had the NIC card set up to look for a DHCP server. That's what I suspected might be the culprite in this case but I think I have ruled that out as the cause.
The problem manifests itself not in that I cannot access the Internet. I can typically start Outlook and Internet Explorer during the intervening period. It's just that some programs seem to arbitrarily not want to start up during that period. As an example, I'll get an e-mail with a Word attachment and click on it – Word won't launch as if it's frozen and won't work and then suddenly comes to life along with other stuff all at the same time. I hope this makes sense to anybody who's been plagued by it.
Re:It is my understanding that the NT, 2000, XP line handle booting and network initialization differently than the 95, 98, Me line. Thus my answer would be the following…
The 95, 98, Me line would make you wait until the network had completely been initialized before allowing you to enter the windows enviroment. I.e. you would be forced to see the Windows splash screen longer, until the entire computer was basically ready.

I remember hearing about this with 2000, that it could take up to 2 minuets after you enter Windows before the network was completely running.

Re:guy, how did you uninstall MS Messenger, just curious
Re:How about MS Messenger? Do you use it? If not I would suggest uninstalling it. I had some lagging issues and they have disappeared since I uninstalled. Just a note I had it so it wouldn't run at startup and I still had some issues until I uninstalled.
