Strange DNS configuration ideas . Need suggestions! [ip subnet] [dns setup]

Q: I have a feeling that this post would be better suited to the Networking thread, but the traffic there is pretty slow compared to OT, and Im ADHD, so patience is not my greatest virtue. =)

Anyway, I was back and forth posting on another forum on the LAN party trying to come up with a way for the following .

Ok, so youll reach a LAN party, and the hosts have set up an intranet page for guests. Simply connect, receive an IP / subnet / DNS server from the DHCP server. The LAN is running its own DNS services that guests can type in things like server.lan “for the intranet page, or UT.lan for UT2K3 game server address.

The question: Can the system be set up so that when a host opens a web browser, the first thing they are sent, is that intranet page? Im thinking maybe some setting in DNS, so the first question from a particular client, the DNS server returns the IP on the intranet server instead of the intended host (ie their home page) and from that moment , returns to normal DNS queries.

This would a Win2k server running DNS, so that would prefer way.

I really appreciate any input anyone may have on this, because its about 10 people and myself all standing around scratching our heads.

Re:Well i wouldnt be editing anyting on the user's PC's, simply telling my dns server to take the first request that comes from any client, and returning an IP other than the one theyre looking for. I was HOPINg this could be at least semi-doable

Re:Maybe you could run a script that automatically sends a network message to each new client detected on the network. the message could tell them where to go for the web site.

Re:Not going to happen. The default web page is set on the client and unless you have admin rights on everyone's boxes, you're not going to be able to change that.

Unless you're running a domain and everyone joins with a policy set to invoke said changes. Not worth it for a party IMO!

Cheers!
