TCP issues: Link goes to a halt when uTorrent is used [torrent download] [firefox]

admin / November 10th, 2010/ Posted in Networking / No Comments »

Q: This is puzzling me for a while .

I can surf the Internet at high speed, fine.

But I start a , and if it starts to upload at 200kbps or 1kbps, my internet (such as port 80, / Opera) just do not work. The pages simply refusing to load . stay at 0%. I pause the torrent, and 20-30 seconds later, my internet starts working again on the same fast once I start speeds.

As weather slows like crazy .

What should I do to fix this?

Re:Did you try another computer to see if you get the same problem?

You said that as soon as BT starts up everything else goes? Try limiting maximum simultaneous connections in your client and seeing if you can get it to work with a low number.

Re:You are not the only one having this problem.

I have to reboot the modem every hour when I have a BitTorrent running.

If you have a solution, other than buying a different modem–such as the Cisco 678–I would certainly like to know.

My guess is the router is choking cause of all the active connections.

[About Actiontec router freezing]

They also searched the broadband reports forums and verified that this situation is generic to the actiontec router when connecting to steam game server and possibly Bittorrent.

Damnit. Why am I the only one complaining about this problem then? Does everyone else use a different router?

You need to open TCP 6881-6999 for Torrent on your gateway under firewall rule or virtual server if your version is older than 3.2.

There is no version 3.2 in uTorrent (that's what the OP is using). Also, the port is randomly set when you start the application the first time. Opening 6881-6999 won't do a thing unless that's what he's using (by the way, you don't need to open up all those ports. Just one is enough).

Fair enough!

But what is that single port? just randomly choose?

Re:First of all, what kind of internet connection are you on? What are your upload/download speeds to be precise.

Once you figure that out, you need to configure your torrent client so it doesn't saturate your connection/speed.

Re:Port's already been forwarded… I think it has to do something with the TCP settings. The guy ran DrTCP on my thing and maybe entered the wrong settings? I'm not sure.
