there is a problem with the security xp?!? [new virus] [folder c]
Q: I recently bought a router, and I have two PCs connected to my network connected to a cable modem, I recently tried to share files with my other computer on my network, and I went to Explorer, Tools | Folder Options | I will give you one of the institutions in the existence of simple file sharing possible, and I recently removed my firewall software . anyways, every time I wake up in the morning, there seems to be a new virus in the folder c: Local Settings All Users Documents and Norton will detect and get rid of. There is nothing in that folder, but can that somehow folder is accessible by anyone outside my network? I currently have passwords for all logins on my computer, and I know nobody knows, this is really weird, and its the third time its happened, Im going to my firewall software to reinstall, but I was just wondering if this is a normal, or maybe one to operate with Windows XP or something? thanks in advance .
Best Answer: If these files appeared around the same time the behavior started, and you haven't installed any new applications, I'd be willing to be it's malware of some sort.
You should definitely run a virus scan on this machine ASAP. It sounds like you don't have a virus/spyware scanner loaded on the box, so you can assume any scanner you install after being infected will have compromised access to your filesystem/registry. Your best bet is an online scanner like Trend/McAfee/Symantec etc supply. I've had good luck with Trend's: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/.
You also need to make sure you've got all of the latest MS security patches installed. There was just a few released for various security vulnerabilities last Tuesday.
It's very, very important that you run a decent AntiVirus/AntySpyware applilcation that does real-time scanning to prevent viruses/spyware/malware from infecting your machine. Which one is right for you depends on a lot of factors – none of which should be "which one's free".
You need a scanner that's been proven reliable on the platform you're running, and doesn't produce a lot of false posltives/negatives, and doesn't break system performance. There's a lot of opinions on this, but very little facts seem to be informing a lot of those opinions. I would recommend doing some research on which scanners do well on VB100 and other independent studies of effecacy on your OS.
P.S.
Here's a decent (though obviously since it's from Nod32, not very neutral) explantion of the VB100 test results for all of the major vendors: http://www.nod32.com.au/compare/compare_… You can see by this that Nod32 and Symantec/Norton are quite a bit more reliable compared to the rest of the scanners according to the VB100 test. This is especially true of machines running Windows Vista and Vista SP1 – McAfee, Trend, and AVG all failed VB100 on Vista SP1.

Re:Most likley they somehow made it past your router/firewall and being that your guest account was enabled they were not challenged with any sort of security authentication to access/add/change/delete information on your machine.
First thing, which I hope you knew to do, is to disable the guest account.
Next I would double check your router/firewall settings and make sure your machine is not accessable by way of any forwarded ports and/or is not on the DMZ.
Hope that helps. And be glad you had a Virus Scanner. It could have been a self-replicating virus instead of a hacker but you never know.
