I have a 98 box and an XP Pro box on the LAN. tnen about 4 weeeks ago, my XP machine was not able to network as it was already browsing. I run the network config wizard, and then go to network setting and the machine is not included in the group. 98 on my PC, the computer in the with all its shares.
i am able to access internet with both my computer and ping them and one or ones to get.
As far as I can remember, I remember making drastic changes to my configuration if problem.
So cause, does anyone have any idea how I can make my two computers network?

Best Answer: go to
Control Panel >
User Accounts >
Advanced >
Manage Passwords >
add>
( add server name and all computer name/user names and password of your server if any) like

Server Name : chinna(write your server name)
User Name :c112\com112 (c112 is computer name and com112 is user name which computer u add)
Password: ******************* ( your server password if any)

add all computers and one time u add it your network is show trouble

Re:good night bump

edit:

Come on, help a brother out.

Re:i've done all that, the netbios over tcp, i'm not sure about that.
i tried the \\"win98box" didn't work, niether did
\\"xp machine" computer name with out the quotes.
so i'm clueless about what to do. I could always reinstall xp. nah.

i can ping the 98 computer through the command prompt and i get a wins throught the nbstat also throught the command prompt. but i can't browse the network. damn.

Re:Have you tried entering your Win98 machine's computername after 2 back-slashes in the run menu on the XP machine?

ie "\\win98pc" without the quotes?

Might be the same as the search option stated above though, I don't really know…

Re:can you ping the other machines?by name? by IP? did you enable netbois over tcp? do you have file/printer sharing installed?

Re:Still no dice.
My XP doesn't even show up in network place. I ran a search for both computers, and no luck.

Re:Is Network Places really the only tool you've used to test your browsing functions? Network Places/Neighborhood is a pitiful connectivity tool. Sounds like you might actually have some name resolution problems but you need to try some other things first. Since you say your internet is working and you can browse from the 98 machine you can assume your overall connectivity is solid. Various ways to get out from your XP box but rather than give you a few mapping options, just used the search computer feature. You can use it from your start menu, or by right clicking on Network places. I'd start by searching for the name of the remote box, but if that doesn't work you can also use the IP. I'd be interested to see what your results are. Granted, using that method probably won't solve your Network Places browsing problem but it just might get you where you want to go. In all my years working with Windows networking I have probably used Network Places/Neighborhood once to every hundred times I mapped a shared with a UNC path, used "Map a network drive" from right clicking the desktop icon, or used the find/search task from the start menu.

Re:I logon to my xp machine. but i can't browse the network. I just checked from my 98 box, and i can explore the shares that i created on my xp, however, as i said before, my xp machine doens't believe that there is a network started or present.

Re:Did you actually login to the xp machine, or did you bypass the login screen (i.e., press 'esc')?

Re:in windows xp pro, i got to my network places—-> entire network—>microsoft windows network.
after clicking on microsoft windows network, i get a Dialouge box with
Unable to browse the network.

The network is not present or not started

Don't know what to do to solve this issue. thanks tho

Re:if your using the luna theme, in click on view workgroup computers

Re:well, i got my 98 box to see my xp machine in . but, i still can't browse the network. i even added a different nic to my pc. and reinstall all the appriate services and protocols.

edit
My xp machine is telling my "no network is found" basically its unable to browse the network even tho it is there.

Re:I do not know why your XP act out but running the Wizard when the system is already configured most of the time will result in additional trouble.

Go over you settings manually.

For the propose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native
ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.
