Best Answer: 1. PCIe 2.0 cards are backward compatible with PCIe 1.0/1.1. Both specs use x16 PCIe slot. It is really the high-end dual GPU cards that need PCIe 2.0 slot because of potential bottlenecking on the PCIe 1.0/1.1 slot.
2. The $120-150 cards are mainstream cards that can play many games at medium to high settings and decent resolution. They would be very fast for your favorite games.
3. You may have difficulty fitting long graphics cards (>9.5 inches). Here's my personal recommendation:

The ATI HD 4770 is only 8.25 inches long, draws up to 80 watts only, is better than the 9800GT and costs just a little more than $100.

Re:your files will be fine, thats the last thing i'd be worried about….going fromME to 2K is a pretty big jump….I'd make sure all software and hardware is compatable with 2K before jumping ship….upgrade your only option? I'd suggest doing a fresh install.
