Want to be my father-in-law to get wireless [wrt54gs] [laptop]
Q: He really does care as much as I do about speed, I want him to be able to take his laptop around the house. I LOVE my WRT54GS, but I wonder if I should just buy it pre-N-tech or not .
Any thoughts?
Best Answer: All you need is his public (external) IP address and router password
Ring him and tell him to go to: http://www.whatsmyip.org/
There will be a number looking something like this 90.184.50.12 at the top of the screen just put this number, including the dots, into the address bar of IE and it will display his router login page
You will need to ask for his IP address each time you want to connect as it is dynamic and will be renewed every time his router is rebooted and will only last some where between a few days to a week.
Re:Careful about Linksys WRT54G, it became a legend up to v4. The newest version has the same color plastic box but it seems to be lacking in performance (No more open guyurce Firmware). If it is WRT54G, v5 do not bother unless it is particularly inexpensive.
MIMO can be a solution if it functionally needed (I.e. heavy LAN transfer through Wireless is used).
Otherwise there are sets of 108 Mb/sec. Wireless Routers and Card buses on sales for less then $50.

pre-n is just that 'pre' there is no guarantee that it will be compatible with -n anyway (I'll bet not), if he needs the range/speed, maybe, but I'm willing to bet he needs reliablility, and the best way for you to provide that is to deal with a known quantity — that is the WRT54G
ok cool thanks

Re:What the hell would he be using the extra speed for if he's just taking his laptop around the house?
