WD2000JB – only 186GB available? [dell deal] [a7v8x]
Q: I just installed my Western Digital 200 MB of Dell, but even before I format the drive shows in Windows as 186.31 GB available. I use a A7V8X with the latest BIOS and Windows 200 SP4, but that should not matter because it is run through the PCI card at the station. Any suggestions on how I can get up to 200 GB or anywhere near that amount before i format?
Edit: Running BIOS revision 1012.
Re:All I'm going to say is that this is normal.
Oh. That, and Western Digital (http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=615&p_created=1034613413&p_sid=fY2bndJg&p_lva=533) is a good place to find answers about Western Digital products (and, in this case, any hard drive). You'll also find an explanation at the above linked page, as I am also not going to go into the issues, as they are explained much better by the hard drive manufacturers.

Re:Makes kind of sense – my other drives have 114GB/120GB and 37.2GB/40GB…
Thanks.
Re:Maybe you should join the other fools filing class actions against OEMs and drive makers because they can't understand either.
Your hard drive does have 200GB. Measured in decimal capacity. Windows however measures it in binary.
Explanation. (http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=YsmY_IWg&p_lva=&p_faqid=615&p_created=1034613413&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzEmc F9jYXRfbHZsMT04MSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=)
I won't bother going into Giba vs. Giga but it basically boils down to the term Mega being adopted to mean 1024 because it was close enough to 1000.
Re:I'd understand if it were something like 195 GB or something like that, but it clearly says on the drive…200.00 GB capacity.
Re:I'm not 100% on this, but I think drive manufacturers often count a Gb as 1000 Mbs, when in fact a GB is 1024Mbs, so that they can advertize a larger data capacity. I think.
