What causes a computer to slow down other than viruses / spyware? [anti virus] [spybot]
Q: A friend of my computer is running really slow lately (since 3 weeks ago), and he has done scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot and Avast! Anti-virus (all up to date). It takes approximately 2 minutes to print a page, and used to seconds.
He s take turns Win2k Pro, so it can not be a system restore.
He said that his computer has a lot of dust inside, but that would not really cause a this.
Any ideas do?
Best Answer: Have you gone into BIOS upon startup and monitored the CPU temp. It IS possible the heat sink may have separated a bit from the CPU and is now not cooling it properly. Or maybe the memory sticks are loose in their slots or even the CPU [not likely but still possible] is loose in its socket. If you can, open the case, power it down by switch on back but leave plugged into wall to still have a ground, keep one hand touching case and just press on all the various connectors, jumpers, etc inside to make sure the heating and cooling of turning system on and off hasn't made any of them come loose.
If none of that is the cause, how did you re-install, from a retail bought OS CD or from a "restore" disc? If it is a "restore" disc, odds are part of restoring was installing all sorts of anti-virus and spyware software without showing that it did so. You're gonna have to go through the tedious process of getting into Control Panel [if it's Winblows, er I mean Windows] and Add/Remove to get rid of them all. You might also want to go into Windows Components and get rid of anything you'll never use in there as well.

Re:If the computer slowed down gradually it could be due to too much installing an uninstalling of softwares, cluttering the registry.. This could be a likely cause, especially if its an old computer. Try some registry cleaner software, they're very effective.
