What does it mean when they say that a game has gone gold? [games release date] [baldurs gate dark alliance]
Q: I looked up and saw a number of games Baldurs gate dark alliance 2 gold had gone, then I saw the games release date is 20/01. I always thought that gold meant that a game had sold 100,000 copies. So what does it mean when they say that a game has gone gold? Net that are ready to be released or that a certain number of copies or did?

Re:I thought it referred to the colour of the master disc that was sent off to manufacturing when the software was ready for release.

some say it's gold when they have a release candidate for the publisher's quality assurance to give a going-over; some when they have a release candidate that they think the publisher's QA will pass; some say it's gold when publisher's QA have approved it; some say it's gold when it's in the hands of manufacturing.
Basically gone gold = should expect release Real Soon Now.

Music has gone gold/platinum after a certain number of sales, not games. Games go gold when they are close to release, but not always (Republic: The Revolution went gold, then was released about 4~6 months later, not good 
)

I don't think it predates the gold "check discs" we used to get from the CD manufacturing plant though, I don't recall ever seeing the term in the later 80's or early '90s before game software on CDs instead of floppies became common.
