What is my best option to rip a DVD on a HD to watch it off of the HD [external hard drive] [hd]
Q: I dont want to backup the movies I do own, but instead they want on an external hard drive and watch them off of that drive on a laptop.
I want my films abroad, but I dont go long drives.

Re:dvd decrypter and powerdvd. powerdvd is nicer than theatertek stuff imo. less buggier for sure.
to reencode, if you want to go that route, dvd rebuilder pro with hc enc is VERY nice (personal favorite versus cce these days), and cheap.

Now say I back up all of my movies and have an original disc die, can I just burn a new dvd with a video_ts folder and copy in the files? Or does it not work like that?
You can also tryout DVD Shrink 3.2. Most newer DVDs are more than 4.7 GB's so DVD Shrink can compress them and also lets you take out features you would never use ie. captioning or French and Spanish audio and fit on a standard DVD. It also lets you burn them in full if you have a DL DVD recorder. If you have Nero, DVD Shrink uses that and does it all in the press of a button. Really a great program.

Might not be playable on a standalone since it's now decrypted. Nero has the option of burning a video DVD, though.

Re:CloneDVD2 + AnyDVD will rip any movies that you're having trouble with copy protection.

Re:Use DVDDecrypter if you want the full movie at original quality. AutoGK supports ripping into XVid, I think, giving you high quality low size backups.
