Where is the best place to buy Windows XP Home? [oem versions] [windows xp home]
Q: I have a copy of Windows XP Home to buy.
I is the most economical solution, and I do not need a manual, so I think OEM. But places like Newegg, Chief Value, etc. require you to purchase your hardware with Windows XP. Unfortunately, I have all the hardware I have Windows XP home need.
I MasterCard went through, but most of the OEM versions have a Dell restore CDs and I do not want that – Im not a Dell and Ive read conflicting messages about whether or not it will work with any computer.
So . Any recommendations on where to buy Windows XP Home?
Thanks!

Re:That is a good price, $76 with free shipping. However, as soon as you add something, shipping makes it not such a good deal. I added a $1.65 80mm fan. And $11.60 in shipping was added!
Re:Man I'm amazed that some companies can get away with selling a cable with Windows and counting that as hardware.
Orginally when I started this thread I thought "hardware" had to be real hardware.
I guess I assumed that after reading this:
"Thank you for your interest in purchasing a Microsoft desktop operating system program from ZipZoomFly.
Under the agreement with Microsoft that computer stores such as ZipZoomFly must abide by, we are only allowed to sell this desktop operating system to you, the end user, if you also order either a fully assembled computer system or a non-peripheral computer hardware component in the same transaction. A fully assembled computer system shall consist of at least a central processing unit, a motherboard, a hard drive, a power supply and a case.
This applies to every Microsoft operating system program you intend to order. If you are ordering two Microsoft operating system programs, you must also order two qualifying accompanying products in the same transaction. "
I guess I just assumed eveyrone's policy was similar to ZZFs and that "non-peripheral computer hardware component" was something like a motherboard, hard drive, etc. I never checked NewEgg's policy.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions and comments. You have all helped me out greatly!
Re:thats a good price there guy.
btw OP, i can understand your frustration, i've had a similar problem. also, if you get it from newegg, just get the one with sp2, i think it's on sale for 82 and they automatically add the 4 pin splitter for no charge.

Hardware could be just about anything

and anything else to add 'Hardware'/
Re:Thanks for the response. Again, sorry if my response sounded harsh. I vented a little frustration at you and I shouldn't have.
Like you, I'd love to hear what others have to say.
As for me, I think I'll take guy's solution and buy an OEM copy of Windows XP home and then take my Windows XP Upgrade and either beg Best Buy to take it back (doubt they will…they're strict about software) or give it to my Dad…he's running Windows 2000 at home).

Please, there are a lot of newbies in these forums (like me). I originally purchased the Upgrade based upon information in another thread. Information that turned out to be incorrect, unfortunately.
So please, either tell me, in detail, how your statement is true, or retract your statement.
I based it off of 2 things:
1) Personal experience. I reinstalled my dad's HP with a Home Upgrade version about 3 weeks ago. I had an ME disc ready, but it never asked for it, which supguyd me.
2) After reading a post in another thread (was the thread you saw at FW?) that also said you didn't need a verification disc.
Not sure what to say. I put 2+2 together and assumed it was this case for everyone.
Perhaps in my case there were OS files the upgrade disk saw (the OS would not boot, so I assumed the partition was corrupted and was inaccessible). Also, I went and checked the FW thread and the posts about not needing a previous version are gone (and conveniently replaced with legal requirements for using an upgrade version). So perhaps there is a "workaround". A bit of googling comes up empty, though.
Again, I was very supguyd that it never asked for a previous version. I'll have to defer to your experience indicating it DOES ask for a previous version, so I'll retract my statement – for now, until I get back to my Dad's place and copy his disc to try for myself again.
If anyone else has used XP Upgrade and has not been asked for media, I'd love to know so we can get to the bottom of this.
Re:FYI, Newegg will let you buy the OEM WinXP Home with a 99¢ CD audio cable, and will reimburse you the 99¢ as well. here ya go (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductdesc.asp?description=12-102-104&depa=0)
edit: heck, I spoke too soon  Look at the combo deals below on that page.

Re:Yes. I currently have a Gateway computer that has Windows 98 on it. I just built an entirely new system (socket 939, AMD 3000+, SATA drive, PCI-E VC) this weekend.
I was under the impression (from reading another thread about the Windows XP Ugrade) that I could buy the Windows XP Upgrade and do a clean install of it on my new system by satisfying it that I am an owner of an existing, licensed copy of Windows 98.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. Gateway doesn't give you Windows 98 installation CDs. They only give you a restoration CD. It doesn't work with the Upgrade. I downloaded an ISO of a Windows 98 Installation CD and burned to disc. That didn't work either. Someone PM'd me this afternoon and said that the Windows XP Upgrade does not work with OEM Windows versions. Don't know if that's true, but the bottom line is that I don't appear to have anything to satisfy the Windows Upgrade installation disc that I'm an owner of a legal copy of Windows 98. And thus, I can't use the darn thing.
Which is why I'm now shopping for a real-live not UPGRADE version of Windows XP. It is incredibly frustrating to have a new computer sitting there (with some new games that game with the VC) and have no way to use it!
But it's my own fault. I should have researched this more.
Re:Does your post mean that you do not have any media for one of the older (ahem) Microsoft OSs that is eligible for upgrade?
Re:"BTW, you don't need a previous version of Windows to use an upgrade version, unlike past copies where it required a M$ OS on the hard drive or asked you to insert a disk for verification."
How in the world can you say this? I bought a M$ Windows Home XP Upgrade two weeks ago when Best Buy was having a $50 rebate. This version of the Upgrade does ask you to insert a disk for verification. I doubt highly that the version that Best Buy has on sale now is any different than what I got two weeks ago.
Please, there are a lot of newbies in these forums (like me). I originally purchased the Upgrade based upon information in another thread. Information that turned out to be incorrect, unfortunately.
So please, either tell me, in detail, how your statement is true, or retract your statement. Sorry if I seem bitchy, but I just wasted $40 bucks on the Upgrade (and I take full responsibility for just relying on what I read on these forums) and I don't want other newbies to do the same.
Now, other than the BB sale on an UPGRADE, does anyone have a recommendation for finding a reasonable price on an OEM copy of Windows XP Home?
Re:Your timing is impeccable. Best Buy is offering XP Home Upgrade this week for $39. It's $89, and they give you a $60 gift card at the register. Here is a Hot Deals forum post discusssing it. (http://{$MySite}/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1553676&enterthread=y).
I would do it soon, as eBay-ers are probably snatching up every copy since there is no limit.
BTW, you don't need a previous version of Windows to use an upgrade version, unlike past copies where it required a M$ OS on the hard drive or asked you to insert a disk for verification.
edit- from a technical standpoint, you don't need a previous version. I'll leave it at that.
Re:You can do a fresh install with an upgrade OS, provided you have the media for an OS that is eligible for upgrade. The installer will ask for that media, and you can go on your way.
Re:Thanks for the suggestion….unfortunately, that's for an upgrade. I already have one of those and it doesn't work for what I'm trying to do….which is install and OS on a completely new system.
