I know there are a ton of it off. Just having the vote on 3:)

None of the above. Have used them all. SpySweeper is better than any of them – but – in Vista, Defender is perfectly adequate – no 3rd party needed.

Windows Defender on Vista is adequate only if you practice safe browsing habits. I've already seen 4 machines personally with SpyDawn infections. Good thing that Vista's system restore works amazingly well.

Re:I use A-Squared Free, SpyBot, Adaware and SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper and the free SuperAntiSpyware. I haven't had any spyware so I don't know which would detect and which wouldn't. In my case the free ones are just as good as the pay ones.

Re:webroot is better and voted the best by several magaines. I use ad-ware and spybot and zonealarm anti spyware. those 3 does a job very well but i use ccleaner to clean up spywares completely.

Re:i used to use both ad-aware and spybot…but ad-aware doesnt really catch anything (just cookies) and spybot catches a lot more, so i just use spybot.

Re:None of the above. :(

SUPERAntiSpyware has the best detection rate and has an exceptional support team. The free version has the same detection rate as the Pro and only lacks real-time protection. However for a one time charge of $39.95 you can purchase the Pro version w/ lifetime updates. No more yearly renewals, and you get the warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you're supporting a top notch company. The real-time has zero impact on system performance unlike a majority of other programs (Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, etc.).

Spybot & Ad-Aware are has beens that need some serious improvements to their code/signature base.

FWIW I base my recommendations on the actual use of the programs when cleaning infected computers and not hearsay. :)

Re:Run Spybot first, and then Adaware SE Personal edition (also free).

Re:I didn't vote either—I use the free version of ad-aware and the other two freebies as well.—guy may be correct—both spyware doctor or spysweepers are perhaps the only two commercials programs in the class of passive malware scanners worth paying for in MHO.

An active anti-virus program is another animal entirely—and choose wisely there—you can have one and only one active at a time without risking horrible conflicts.

And now you need a software firewall and some process control app(s) to start even approaching a decent layered security set up.

See the sticky at top of this forum page—the consolidated security thread.

Re:Spysweeper or Counterspy are the best stand-alone pay anti-spyware applications … Spyware doctor is decent too but I've had mixed results with it.

Currently I use Panda Internet security as my only real-time protection & very little gets by it … I also run weekly scans with Counterspy, free Ad-Aware & Spybot Search & destroy plus I use a program called Spyware Blaster which assists in protecting web-browsers.

Re:Spyware Doctor or Spysweeper. Haven't found any antispyware programs better than the two. So in order to comply with the , I didn't vote.

Re:FTW? (http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?) handles viruses as well.
