Who has a Cisco Secure PIX Firewall, Firewall SonicWALL PRO or a Nokia IP110 Firewall / VPN Appliance? [client software support] [customer support options]

admin / December 2nd, 2010/ Posted in Networking / No Comments »

Q: When I posted a few days ago, I study a couple of buying one of these firewalls to be implemented in two locations.

As for firewalls, we need something safe and easy to administer, with good customer service options. The ability to do content filtering would certainly plus.

For VPN should support native, or have an upgrade available. Good customer service is a must. Client software on Windows 2000 is a must.

What is the best way to get prices on these products and the available options? Call the companies themselves? A salesman?

Any help would be very appreciated.

I m off to hunt.

Thanxz

Re:These are going to be for a relatively small amount of users.

Behind the firewall, We'll probably have 70 users MAX, and that number won't we growing very rapidly.

For VPN support, All that will be for is remote access to the network. The branch offices themselves are already set up with there own Frame circuits and DLCI's, with cisco routers on each end.

Re:Breaker, I work with both Pixes, and with Nokias. Specificallly I am controlling a handful of their 650 and 330 boxes. I personally belive that for Support it would be nokia, pix, then sonicwall. Take note: The Nokia is Checkpoint based (Entirely checkpoint actually) But they have their own support, and they are also responsible for the operating system, so disregard horror stories about checkpoint on solaris and checkpoint on NT.

I am only recomending the 330 Boxes (or the 650s, they are great, but im sure not in the range your looking). I have NOT used the IP 110 Boxes, and if they dont run IPSO, I wont recomend it.

Oh yea, how many users (behind firewalls and VPN users), how big of pipes are we talking, and are tunnels going to be in place between the two locations?

Edit: If you want, I can dump you a copy of the config editor for checkpoint via email (perfectly legal) you then run it local, and can see how it is managed from a firewall and vpn standpoint.

Re:Supposedly, all resellers are VAR's. There are different levels, though, based on the number and type of Cisco-Certified employees. But what you need is a contact you are comfortable with, so call all of the VAR's until you find one that will answer your questions and seems halfway honest. Having been employed at a Cisco VAR in my previous life, I can tell you that you should go with the company that gives you the best service and most respect right off the bat. If they act like they don't want to answer your questions or if they don't have time for you, find another VAR. And take Spidey's advice and mention a Smartnet contract to the VAR up front, because Cisco likes it when Smartnet's get tacked on to the sale. Or you might try to hold out on the SmartNet until the end of the deal and negotiate for some consulting time. Your choice.

Re:[EDIT]guy (not spidey, sorry)

we're looking to buy new.

Do you have experience with these boxes? What can expect for price and support?

Getting More Customers/Clients
Re:guy

I did a search on the Cisco web site, and finally was able to get it to list resellers in my area, Maine.

How do I make sure I get a VAR (value added reseller)?

This is the site I used.

Thanks

Child Custody: Child Support
Re:Yeah, call your local VAR or call the companies for VARs in your area. people are generally pretty willing to sell you stuff.

IMHO:
Ease of configuration 1-nokia(checkpoint), 2-sonicwall, 3-pix
ease of management(logs, etc) 1-sonicwall, 2-nokia, 3-pix
featuress 1-pix, 2-nokia, 3-sonicwall
performance (VPN, forwarding) 1-pix, 2-nokia, 3-sonicwall
scale 1-pix, 2-nokia, 3-sonicwall
support 1-pix, 2-sonicwall, 3-nokia

hope this helps!
Don't know much about making a firewall do contenet filtering. Generally you let a firewall be a firewall and nothing else, use another box for content filtering. carefull with the sonicwall, I've seen many people run out of processor on those guys and rollover their firewall.

Re:Based on your requirements, have you looked into a Nokia 330 Internet appliance?

They run Checkpoint, a very secure OS (modified Free BSD called IPSO), have a web interface for box management, and then the standard checkpoint software. Licences can be had for no, any, or limited encryption and for both company and web-user support it will be hard to find any easier.

(The boxes can be found on e_bay occasionally fairly cheaply, or contact some local distributers).

While you mentioned the 110, the 330 is a bit beefier, and you will be able to get much better support and customizability with it.

Re:If you buy the PIX, get it through a local Cisco VAR (value-added reseller). You might pay 2%-3% more, but you've got someone to hold accountable if the damn thing breaks, and they usually have better ties with Cisco SE's (Sales Engineers) and other support options. And some VAR's actually have people who know what they are doing with a router or a PIX.
