Why can I not pass the Win2k logon screen!? [system statistics] [galls]

Q: Hi guys and

Ive just my own system to build for the first time ever, and surprisingly it seems to work quite well. It was good start, and everything seemed to work ok. controlled and it was running at 36C, etc. Then I installed win2k and things went wrong!

Well is actually nothing went wrong as I get no errors, but every time I try to login to the PC win2k closes itself down. From what I understand is it actually goes into standby mode when I see to turn on the switch shows, login now, screen and try again powers down .

Ive have a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP Mobo, 420 W power supply, and a 80G IBM GXP120 HD

Anyone no suggestions?

THanks

micelis

Re:After last nights round of fiddling I think i've got a better idea on how to solve the problem, a smart collegue of mine suggested it might an IRQ conflict, and I checked it by removing the keyboard, and had no problem for 2 hours. When i plugged it back in as soon as I hit a key it goes into shutdown again. Both keyboard and mouse are USB, as is the modem. Checked the IRQ, looks like the graphics card is using the same one as two of the USB devices are. So i'm thinking I either get a PS/2 or check how I can change the IRQ for the APG slot or something..

Re:oh and as for the switching off rebooting when I get an error, i've done that but it doesn't help much. It still goes into standby and still doesn't give any error message…
I'm starting to fear it might actually be the mobo that's to blame now..

Re:Thnx guys, I'll give your suggestions a try this evening

the full list of hardware is :

Gigabyte GA-8IHXP Mobo
Videologic ZXR-500 Speakers
420W Hiper PSU
2 * 256Mb Kingston ValueRam RDRAM Rambus PC-800
Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454
Qtronix USB Keyboard Win/98
Gigabyte Radeon 9000 64MB DDR AGP RP VO
Alps 1.44MB Internal 3.5"
Lite-On 16xDVD 48xCD Int IDE OEM
IBM Deskstar 120GXP 82.3GB UDMA100
Coolermaster D147H53D
1.7 P4 Intel Celeron 128K cache
Lite-On 48×12x48 CDRW IDE Burnproof
Modem Blaster
Lian-Li PC60 USB

I've reinstalled Win2k, two different version, still does the same thing. I checked the eventviewer, it's giving me errors concerning 'Ultra' as well as an unknown PCI-device for which I cant seem to find drivers. As for the ultra I'm guessing it's referring to the Promise UltraATA controller, which apparently won't start. But seeing I'm not using it I don't see how that would interfere with the normal operation of the rest of the pc..?

Anyway, thanx for the help guys, i'll keep you posted on what's happened after i've had a go at following your suggestions

Re:Its F6. Make sure that your bios settings for power management are turned off. Also, press f8 when the computer prompts you and see if you can boot into safe mode. If you get that then turn off all of your power management that you can in the Control Panel and also disable rebooting when you get an error. Right click on my computer, select properties. Select the Advanced tab on the right and then under the 3rd option down under Startup and Recovery click on settings. Under the System recovery section uncheck the automatically reboot. Now try booting normally again. If it dies on you then it will give you a blue screen and let you know what is going on. Post back with all the detail you can write down.

Re:Format and install again, and press F7 when it asks if you want to install any 3rd party scsi/raid drivers. I belive it is F7, it will not beep or anything, this disables the ACPI so now when you go to shut down, you will have to hit the power button. What hardware do you all have i it, for like video and what not?
