Why does my NT Server backup does not work? [backup exec] [server backup]
Q: I am running NT 4 Server on one of my servers here and its gotten to the point where most mornings after logging in to NT backup will not open, I reboot the system to get to work naturally because this is a server with users on this can be frustrating. Anyone have any idea to fix this or what is wrong, I would prefer not to hear a suggestion that the Backup Exec Now if that is not feasible.
Best Answer: Check if you DVD Burner is working all right or not. Insert a blank DVD RW into it and start by trying to burn some simple data into it. Avoid Norton for burning. Instead, use Windows inbuilt burning system or Windows Media Player. If it's successful then your Drive is O.K. Else check the connection from your Drive to your Computer.
Re:Same here, never used the NT backup program (It is almost as bad as win95 backup). Anyway, you could try boosting the foreground app on the server. That might work. You could also try reinstalling your service pack. That seems to fix most of the strange problems.
Re:Well, there's at least one NT guy here, but I haven't relied on NT backup in several years. If you've got the budget, look into the 3rd party backup programs like ArcServer or BackupExec. We've been using BackupExec for several years now and haven't had any problems.
Re:There's got to be some NT guys here.
Re:Event Viewer shows no errors and I just the AT scheduler through the NT resource kit for scheduled backups. The problem is not necessarily with the backups specifically as they sucessfully run. The problem is when I go to open the backup program every morning in order to erase the new tape, (I know I don't have to do this but I do). The Backup proggie itself won't open unless I reboot the box.
Re:Have you checked your event viewer? Do you have normal, scheduled backup's? How are you backing up, AT command, manual, etc?
