Win 98 illegal copy message when installing OS [copy message] [illegal copy]

Q: After I had seen some problems with most of my programs, I decided to format my hard disk and reinstall Windows. I had done this before so at least I think I know what I do. Anyway, after formatting the C drive with a boot disk and use Fdisk again I inserted my recovery CD. The computer is an eMachines with one of those special CDs designed for the system. Ok, so after I reboot I get this message I am an illegal version of the OS and to some 1-800 number. What is this? The CD is the original, not a copy. I redid all my work over several times and the same would only now no longer does the piracy screen, but it is replaced by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen and you can type anything. I also tried a different OS (Win 2000) and install the same happens. Any thoughts . Thanks!

Re:As someone that has never had a "restore" disk, is that the same as a regular, full copy of Win98?

Ez Dvd Copy.

could also be that the hdd had some sort of recognisation tattoo on the drive which was wiped by the format.
I seem to recall Packard Bell had this with their hdds

I had a Packard Bell…they had a "recognisation tattoo" or something on the HD like that.. BIG PAIN IN THE ASS :|
Do you have a system CD…on some of the computer that i got they come with a system cd that would Fdisk and format for your and put "recognisation tattoo" back on the HD

Re:Does the machine still have the original EMachines hardware? Sounds like their version of Windows is checking for some piece of hardware (motherboard perhaps?) to ensure that you are installing it on an Emachines system. Not an uncommon practice with OEM versions of Windows.

Re:Ok, well I am trying to do some different stuff to determine the actual problem. Anyway, I took out the emachine hard drive, which i think is the problem, and made it a slave to my other computer. When I went into Windows XP and looked at the drive, all the Windows 98 files/folders appeared to be there, hence saying it installed correctly. THen I used my Windows Xp CD and installed that onto the hard drive hooked up to my computer now as the master to determine if that would install and work. Yes, it does. So now my only question is: what is the actual problem lol? Is it the motherboard? That is my main guess. I will try taking out the video card/sound card as well. Thanks.
