Q: Hi, I just upgraded from win95

I to me for my Epson printer switch 740 of the parallel port (which works fine) to the USB. I have the latest USB drivers from Epson. I started the system with the printer connected but not enabled. After I finished booting I turned on the printer. The cursor changes into an hourglass for a second and then nothing. In the device was a manager? USB device. When I tried to install the driver through , everything seemed to go ok, but still? device. Any ideas?

Thanks,
guy

Re:Just for yucks I tried the 740 on a 1 foot cable. Still no go.

Re:yep. A new visioneer 4400 scanner worked fine. It must be the 740.

Re:Mark M: my rig:

FIC VA-503+, BIOS version: JE4331, VIA APOLLO MVP3
AMD k6-2+ 450@550
256MB PC100

I had a feeling it wasn't just me.

guy: usb bios is enabled. I temporarily plugged in a web cam. A popup window asked for a device driver. I canceled and unplugged the cam. So I think the usb is working. Thanks for your time.

I read in an MS document that there are 2 kinds of usb cables. Fast and slow. And that if you use a long slow cable (less shielding) for a device that needs a fast cable it won't work. Any body else here about this? I think my cable is 5'.

Buy the way, where can I get cheap usb cables?

Re:What motherboard/chipset have you got?

I've tried several Abit KT7s – not a single one would detect my Epson 740 on USB (on Win 98, Win98 SE, Win ME or Win2k).
