Win XP and Half Life, Problems?!? [half life blue shift] [abit kt7a]

admin / July 4th, 2010/ Posted in Operating Systems / No Comments »

Q: I have XP installed for almost two weeks now, and except for the mentality of using 98SE, I am very happy. I installed Half Life (Blue Shift) was normal, but every time I try to start, the screen black for two seconds then my desktop comes. I have heard mixed reviews on detonator drivers (far). So I have not installed one of them. Besides, Ive always assumed that the det. DRVR. was more for performance than operating.

Best Answer: I had a similar problem with the same game. It turned out I don't have a graphics card in my laptop that can run it properly. So that's what I would check first, see if your card can handle it. I also found out it is crazy expensive to update graphics cards for a laptop, hopefully that isn't your problem.

Re:<< I'm running XP and have a wierd problem with Half-life. It runs ok, and you can load a game when you first start it, but if you ESC to the menu and try to load another (rather than an in-game quickload), when it loads the game, all you get is the Half-Life background screen (with the version number on it) and the actual game sounds. I have to exit the game to the desktop then start it up again. Anybody else seen this? (Yes, I have the latest patch)

Yeah, I have this on one of my machines only. Running XP, and if you press ESC or quit a game, and try to resume, or start a new one, you hear sounds, but the menu stays up, doesn't switch to the game. If I go back to the main menu, it works tho ….

Re:Do any of you guys get a problem when you alt-tab out of CS in XP and when you alt-tab back in, you only get a black screen? I haven't found a work around for this yet. I have tried using several Nvidia driver versions(except 23.11, it has never worked on my comp w/o BSOD whenever I boot up.)

Re:You could try www.guru3d.com and just download some dets until they work (or you run out of dets). Also try the det destroyer to remove everything from your registry between changes. Half life is completely compatable w/ WinXP (I have half life, CS, and opp force) and all of them work fine. I recently had a frame rate problem but that was fixed, and it was b/c i'm an *** and wasn't XP's fualt.

Re:Okay, I downloaded the patch(?) and I downloaded nvidia 2.3.1.2 from MS and still have no luck running Blue Shift. I'm not sure what to try next, any ideas??

Re:I used to hav the same problems with asus7700
Try using the 27.30.. theyre leaked but they work alot better
get em here (http://www.guru3d.com)

Re:I think I know your problem, you are using the default WinXP Nvidia drivers that come on the WinXP CD? Well they don`t support OpenGL and I presume you are trying to run HL in OpenGL mode rather the D3D so you need to upgrade to newer Nvidia drivers for XP which fully support OpenGL the best at the moment IMHO are 23.12 drivers which you can get and download by clicking on Windows update in WinXP.

You may want to download Windows 2000/XP NVidia Refresh Rate Fix (http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/nvreffix.html) as well which fixes the 60hz problem in OpenGL,install it after ok.

Btw you should have the latest drivers for your Santa Cruz as well,if you still get problems try Windows 98 compatiability mode.
