Im Windows 2000, and recently has started acting really weird. For no apparent reason and completely at random times, just locks up. Its not completely stop, because if I play music, the music continues to play after the lock-up. What happens is my computer stops accepting input (keyboard or mouse . the does not even work), and the scene is not updated all ( on Web pages, status bars, CD burning stops moving, etc.). Something that can be proposed, would be a great help, because Im a complete loss on this one

Re:Well, I see that this isn't such an isolated case.

I have done a little searching, and have not found any reference to this problem on NVidia's web site, and the company that produced my video card (Diamond) doesn't even support it anymore. I will continue to search, but so far I have turned up nothing

Re::disgust:Not only do I have the same problem but I also run an Asus V7700
card with an Nvidia chiperoo!!
system as follows: Athlon TB 1gig on an Asus A7V, 256mhz PC133, Asus V7700 video card, Santa Cruz sound card( this is actually where I thought my problem was until I read this thread),CR-R,CD-RW,LS-120,floppy,W2K,Mcafee VS,
Keyboard,Mouse and Joystick all USB connected. He freezes up about twice a day and I just finished my third flawless re-install using NTFS file system.
Any resolution or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I should have stayed with ME? Only kidding:P:cool::disgust::frown::disgust::cool:

Re:That sounds similar, but not the exact same, becuase I have left my computer run all night, and it hasn't come out of it, or done anything

I have determined that it is almost certaintly the NVidia drivers, and I am wondering if anybody knows of anything I could do to fix this problem?

Re:I have the same exact problem!! i get random lock ups. It's driven me to beleive that i need to go back to win98SE or winME.. I thought the problem was created when i upgraded to directx8, but i recall the same problem from before. I also changed the motherboard at one time, and it helped, but i still get locked up. It's really weird, sometimes i have to wait for like 3-5 minutes for the "my computer" double-click action to occur (window opens blank.. can't see drives). If you leave it alone long enough, it comes back or the last commands go through.. but OMG it's pathetic.

Currently i'm running a P3 600b, 256mbs PC133 SDRAM, ASUS motherboard (133fsb), 2 15gig maxtor HD (5400 and 7200 / ata33 and ata66), Hercules 3D Profet II Ultra (geforce2 Ultra, nvidia 6.31 drivers)..

please help if you can..

Re:Well, I have discovered that this problem happens for me with just about any NVidia driver installed. If I want a stable system, I have to use the crappy MS drivers, and then there is no video excelleration. So, I either get stability or games! I will continue to try different NVidia drivers, but so far I have tried the 5.22, 5.25, and 7.17 (but I didn't expect this to work). I will now try the 5.14, 5.16, and 5.17 drivers, and hope for the best.

Re:Well I hate to add to the problem but I believe I have the same exact situation(different equipment though). My computer freezes but will continue to play mp3s just like guy. My setup consists of PII 500 on Soyo 6BA+IV(ultra 66), IBM 13 gig drive(7200rpm, ultra 66), 384megs of pc133 ram, Dlink 10/100 network card, sb16, voodoo3 2000 AGP, Win2k, SP1, and few apps. The reason I saw a few apps is that the problem happens without any apps installed too. So I'm sorry to also be asking for help but if anyone has any clues as to why this is happening I'd be a happy person!

Re:Well, my video card is a Viper770, running the NVidia TNT2 chipset, as was mentioned, so I will try the driver trick, thanks

Re:Give us a few details, such as make/model of your motherboard and video card…

From my experience, most Win2k freezes have been video card related. And since you're mentioning things that "shouldn't" be happening, such as the display no longer refreshing, then that doesn't sound too far-fetched.

Re:I got a TNT2 in my machine and used to get some funky lockups, the system just hard locked (something that apparentlly should be quite unusual for w2k). This did happen randomly but mostly during video play back, so I switched from Detonators 6,31 to 5,22 and so far, knock on wood, it seems to have done the trick.

So basicly, check drivers, only thing I can think of.
